I just bought a bunch of new stuff for the 4runner. I Bought a new pioneer double din head unit, nothing fancy, i dont need nav or anything, thats what my tablets for, two new 8 inch subs and an amp, and a Polk audio dxi6500 component system from crutchfield. I know that i can install the stereo and subs no problem but does anyone have any clue on how hard it is to install this new polk system? It comes with tweeters, crossovers and woofers. Does this just replace what is in a 4runner?

If you mean "how do I install this Polk component system because I am new to component audio speakers" then you should check out Crutchfields website. && also do a search on T4R. But seriously ... Crutchfield's website instructions are totally awesome.

For best result you're going to want to get a small 2 Channel amplifier for the front speakers, anything is better than headunit power.

The ease of the installation depends on how large the tweeters end up being, there is a lot of variation in the size of 1" Tweeters and if they are small enough in diameter and shallow enough, you will be able to mount them behind the factory tweeter panel, if not you will need to chop up the panels to mount them on the panel itself.

The Woofers will most likely screw into the factory spots, but some modification may be needed there as well.

The X-overs just need to be mounted somewhere in the speaker wire, doesn't matter where, you can do it in the door, or under the dash, behind the kick panel, under the seat, whatever works.

I would recommend running new speaker wire, at least 14ga (12 is better) to the crossover instead of using the factory since it's a component setup.

You are the man, thats exactly what i needed to know, and i might look into the amp but i havent done any car audio work other than plug and play subs with amps so i wouldnt want to get in over my head.

Def search some and read the crutchfield stuff posted. I did mine a few years back and it was my first component install. It's not difficult if you have installed other audio before but it is not just going to work by swapping out your existing pieces for the new ones.

High level:
1. Head unit connects to amp via rca cables
2. Amp connects to battery and ground as well as head unit for power
3. Rear speakers and crossovers need to be wired to amp
4. Front speakers and tweeters connect to crossovers.

You will need to rerun all new speaker wire to all speaker locations to handle the increased amp power.

Today I would like to talk about a few Stereo Mod's I've done. I put these speakers in over 2 years ago but last week I had my door panels off and thought I would take some pictures.

The panels are really easy to remove for anyone who hasn't done it before.

I needed a new stereo because my beloved 2003 Alpine MP3/CD Radio finally died last month. *It is pictured below

I ended up buying a really kick-@ss used Alpine MP3/CD Premium Head Unit on EBAY for $200. *It has a born on date of 2005

New Stereo Upgrade

1. Sound Deadening Mod - Roofing Material

5. Ran new 14 (or 16g?) wires from the amp under the seat to all 4 doors (this is highly recommended by me)

Here is my new (used) Alpine 9835 MP3/CD Head Unit. I cannot stress enough how much of a difference the 4V pre-out, 109db signal to noise ratio and the TILT feature make this thing awesome. Bought on ebay for $109 + $99 for a new faceplate.

Running an amp to the speakers isn't much different than the sub amp, only difference is the settings for crossovers on the amp itself. As long as you don't get left and right mixed up anywhere you'll be fine.

Thanks man, its help like this that makes this forum the best on the internet, as the man in the big brown truck keeps bringing in the parts im understanding each individual piece better. And i will be wiring up an amp to the speakers, just not till Christmas, my wife said i have to have something to open on Christmas.

Also, would anyone know what harness to buy, i see we are supposed to be able to use a metra 70-1761 but i only have one plug going to my stock head unit and the two antenna plugs. The plug has 12 wires and it comes from the stock amp. Im sure that there are supposed to be 3 plugs going into the head unit?

Metra 70-1761 is the right harness. You'll remove the factory amp, and connect the head unit (using the Metra harness) to the plugs connected to the factory amp. I just used one this past week, neat and clean.

The 4runner has two antenna inputs, front and rear. You can use either, or get a Y-adapter and plug them both in. If your reception with front only is fine, you should be set.
