Aussie Locker Questions

I am getting ready to pull the trigger on an Aussie locker until i can afford to pick up an ARB. I have to represent T4R on a Yosemite trip for the 4th of July weekend with an army of Jeeps and ill be damned if i am going to go unlocked.

1- Are there any consequences for the rear in terms of possible damage that i should be aware of?

2- From what i have read this is pretty much a self install in the 3rd if you are somewhat mechanically inclined, true?

3- Anything else i should do while i am underneath R&R?

4- How bad is the ratcheting noise that everyone keeps talking about? (Gonna check Youtube)

Thanks for the input, btw pictures coming with the MTZ'S and the painted Tundra rims which i have been working on for months. Everyone kept complaining about the cheesy rims i had on the T4R when i bought it so i am almost done!

Nope that was the only place I have found them too, I may pull the trigger on one too. I just cant justify the cost of an ARB air locker.

1- Are there any consequences for the rear in terms of possible damage that i should be aware of? Increased axle wrap and tire wear, increased backlash it engages when you put the truck in gear. Nothing's happened yet!

4- How bad is the ratcheting noise that everyone keeps talking about? (Gonna check Youtube) Not bad, it's only really noticable at slow speeds and really tight turns. It settles down after a couple thousand miles and if you drive casually you'll hardly ever know it's back there.

It is a great deal for the money. Just remember to either lightly accelerate or coast through corners and be prepared for some tire chirping and banging if you make quick merging turns onto county roads.

So the locker is completely installed. Let me tell you how intimidating the sound on that locker is when i first pulled out of the drive way. Infact it felt like my rear axle imploded. After the gear oil circulated for a few minutes the noise was nearly non-existent. It is true that the Aussie locker does click more dramatically in a turn but its like the click on your seat belt, You hear it but you don't really listen.

This afternoon i will be taking it through a few bogs to get a feel for the locker. I will have some pictures and hopefully some rooster tails to accompany them.

It was easy to install with a minimum amount of tools. It took 2 of us about 3 hours total not including brake bleeding. I must admit, it was slightly unnerving to tear apart the third member but we made it through. Mission accomplished.

Nice, let us know how it performs. I am looking to get the same locker (just rear), how hard was the install? I've never done gears before

The Aussie just replaces the spider gears so you don't need to adjust anything. Ring and pinion gears (the ones you get to compensate for larger tires) are a lot harder to install and require setting the proper backlash.

So I just pop out the spider gears and drop in the locker? (i know its not that easy but just for simplification)
 
Yip. Other brands like the Detriots are harder to do because they have a new carrier also, but the Aussie is that simple.
