"Auto bleed" ABS Module?

I believe I have some air in my abs module (pedal starts hard and then softens after LOTS of traditional bleeds and all new brake hardware, booster, master cylinder, wheel cylinders, fluid, etc.) and I am going to try a tool made by Autel. It’s called a “MaxiCheck” and can allegedly “auto bleed” the ABS module on our rigs. Has anyone tried this on a 3rd gen 4runner? If so, I would welcome your insight/experience.

Never tried a scan tool to cycle the valves in the ABS pump. I just drive down a gravel road and lock up the binders several times so the ABS pump cycles lots. Then immediately go bleed the brakes again moving lots of fluid through.
If still not happy, rinse and repeat.

You may have a bad vacuum line, or ………

Did you bench blead the new master cylinder before install?

Having previously owned an Autel unit, it's not something I'd buy again or recommend. It was just clunky, the website for updates was down for 8 months straight (I never did get to update outside of right when I first bought it), and didn't work on some vehicles it was claimed to work on... including my 1997 Toyota T100.

I also just do the gravel-road ABS cycling and couldn't be happier with the results. Start there as it's free, quick and easy.

I just purchased the Autel Maxicheck auto brake bleed. It worked great! I had mushy brakes and a sinking brake pedal and with the scanner bleeding the ABS it corrected all the issues.

On our older 96-98 ECU I think there might be a way to cycle the ABS with the diagnostic plug bolted to the intake. I know that’s where you jumper to read ABS codes with the flashing ABS light.

Anyone out there have any info on that connector? My MacMentor told me what to jumper and then it gave me the code definition.

99 on up has the newer ECU. I can see controlling the ABS with a scanner in the 99-02 ECU.

You could always throw some Liqui Moly in the lines.

Try bleeding the brakes KOER. That has always worked for me. Some manufacturers now require having a scan tool for bleeding, such as BMW.

I am trying to bleed my ABS as well, I ordered the maxicheck but can not get it to even give me the option to bleed the ABS.

How did you get it to work?

The factory tools (up to '00, at least), plug directly into the ABS module in the engine bay - there is no OBD-II based way of bleeding the brakes.

This is the factory procedure (without the ABS bleed) for '96-'00 4Runners:

That should get you to 'driveable but not nice' - and good enough for the gravel-road-ABS trick...

The 4runner on 4 jack stands on drive, wheels off the ground, accelerate/brake, will cycle the abs pump a whole lot more than a gravel road and you are ready to bleed as is.

I did wet roads at a known slick intersection. It took three times to not feel a difference in pedal during/after abs activation.
