Auto-dimming mirror issue

I have a 2020 SR5P with the auto dimming mirror - does anyone know if it is possible to have it default to OFF rather than ON/AUTO at start-up? I can't remember if my 2018 had the auto dim but I don't recall ever having an issue with it yet the 2020 is perpetually so dark as to be almost unusable, even during the day and at night despite no bright lights behind me so I am forever turning it off.

I wish mine got dark enough to be worth a damn at night. Fine during the day, hardly does anything to block headlights at night.

Ahhh, you know what? I added a dash cam to this one that wasnt on the other one. And it is right in front of the mirror. I had no idea there was a sensor on the front. I'll have to check that, thank you.

Just an update: the issue was indeed the backup camera. It was positioned such that it completely blocked the sensor on the front of the mirror that I had no idea was there. Relocated the camera and mirror works fine now. Thanks to everyone who helped.

You know, I added a camera to my '20 as well and I've noticed the same problem. Got something new to do tomorrow. Thanks for the thread.

For those of you scratching your heads about the sensors.

There are two sensors on the inside rearview mirror - one that faces through the windshield and the one that faces backwards.

The one looking through the windshield asks "is it dark outside?" If the answer is yes, then the second sensor asks "do I see bright lights" (i.e. headlights). If that sensor sees the bright light then it dims.

If something is blocking the front facing sensor (dashcam, parking pass, dealer service tag etc.), then the rear facing sensor is always live and thinks that the ambient light is a headlight.
