Auto-dimming rear view mirror install?

Has anyone installed an auto-dimming rear view mirror in a '14 SR5? I didn't go with the SR5 Premium because I wasn't crazy about the Softex, but didn't realize at the time it didn't have an auto-dimming mirror. Every car I've ever owned has had one and I'm kind of lost without it.

Is it something that my husband could easily install for me, or is it better to just have the dealership do it because of airbag sensors and what not? Thanks!!

I haven't done it, but I have a '14 SR5, and am going to install the auto dim mirror with HomeLink (garage door openers). There are a few write ups on the forum. From what I have read, it is quite easy to do, if your husband (or yourself) is handy at all with some tools/mods.

Im pretty sure the gentex mirrors come with instructions for install also

5th Gen 4Runner 2014/2015 SR5 Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror install

Hey,

I purchased a 15' SR5 (NOT Premium) because I hate leather and dont have need or use of a sunroof since there is always something on the rack. Didn't realize the one premium option I assumed would be included would be a auto-dimming mirror, wrong. After having one for so many years its hard to go back to a standard mirror so here is how I made the upgrade, hope this helps someone.

I purchased a Gentex Infinity auto-dimming mirror with HomeLink and Compass off ebay. I wanted a nice brand new one!

This is my first write up so I'm sure it is somewhat incomplete. Let me know if you have any questions.

First thing, the SR5 DOES NOT have a prewire for the mirror above the overhead console. This is probably true for the non-premium trail edition as well.

1. Remove the overhead console. Open the sunglasses holder to reveal (2) screws, unscrew these and the side of the console closest to the windshield should be loose enough to get your fingers in and pull down. The side of the console furthest away from the windshield is held in by 2 clips on either side. I pulled midway from the loose end (close to the windshield) and the middle of the console down to remove the console. It was a bit tight, might feel like youre going to break it but it came out nicely. This will expose the wiring harness, unclip this to completely remove.

In the wiring harness tied down near the drivers side visor is a constant power, I tapped into this for my constant. There is NO accessory power here.


I found that the easiest place to tap into accessory power was running the accessory wire down the A pillar and tapping into the side power mirrors. Worked beautifully.

To remove the A Pillar, locate the circular air bag badge, gently pry it open FROM THE TOP of the badge to reveal a bolt, unscrew this. The only remaining clip is about 3/4 of the way down so pull this directly out and away.

I also had to partially remove the panel under the steering column, youll see the bolts on how to do this once your down there.

I sent you a PM, then i thought of posting this to this thread so that everyone may benefit on it:


I'm on the process of installing my auto dim mirror, I was hoping to get an ACC source from the overhead console, but as you explained there are no acc source there, the purple wire that i though an acc is connected to a sensor and the moment to connect the accessory, the voltage drop to 5V and the trac light on the dashboard light up.

I have several question for you before i started to un mount my A pillar frame:

1. "The only remaining clip is about 3/4 of the way down so pull this directly out and away." -- how hard did you pull it? it it the same force you have to apply on the overhead console panel clip?

2. "I also had to partially remove the panel under the steering column, you'll see the bolts on how to do this once your down there." --- bolts are found at the back of the panel?

3. "side power mirrors control" - did you pry that from the outside or did you push it from behind?

4. to save me from testing each wire, what is the color of the wire where you tap the ACC cables?
