Noob question I guess, just wondering which is perferred for trailing? (Not rock climbing) I prefer a manual for both but i was curious on other thoughts and why one is better than the other in peoples opinions. :flamewar:

as long as we are talking first gen i dout any one will say auto. things are slow enough with 5 speeds lol.

I always go manual! Automatic is best suited for commuting, so you can drink coffee, talk on the phone and do your make-up while driving.
I am sure that for just tooling around on a dirt road an auto will be fine, But my opinion/preference is always a manual transmission. I just like to Drive while I'm driving.....now that I think about it, none of my 4 vehicles even have Cup holders. Hmmm.

haha for sure, Made me think that this is actually my first car with cup holders too, granted they are flimsy but still my other 2 didnt have any. I just got used to the shift with a doctor pepper between my legs haha pure fun in traffic

1. Is it a daily driver?
2. Do you live in the city?
Personally I live in the country, and would love to have a five speed in my 93 4Runner. However due to a drunk driver - using my left leg is problematic. If you live in an urban area you will want an automatic.
Off roading - a manual is the way to go. However I've found my automatic 4Runner's transmission to be quite capable. My basically stock rig has impressed quite a few of the Jeep folks I wheel with (most of whom drive Rubicons). I go where they go - except the rock climbing. That's due more to the tires (BFG A/Ts) that the 4Runner.

When you say trailing, you're talking about fire-breaks and back roads and such? Either would be fine, though I'd prefer a manual because I prefer manuals.

I second KidV's comments--I prefer a manual for 99% of my driving, but when offroading with larger obstacles, an automatic would be much better. With a manual, you either keep moving forward, or you stall (or you use the clutch too much, a bad idea)--with an automatic, you can stop, roll backwards a little once you know exactly where the obstacle goes up, then goose it a bit and pop up onto the obstacle, all in one smooth motion. BUT, Yoda, since you tossed out crawling, then I'd say manual for everything--with other types of wheeling, it's preferable to pick and choose your gears for certain situations. For example, with mud, an auto will start too low and dig, while you can start into the slop in a higher gear with a manual, and float better from the beginning.
