Auto to 5 speed swap, need your input!

I can assure that the rear ABS has nothing to do with speedometer. I have my ABS cutout from the rear axle. And my speedo working properly.

I have a feeling that the speedo is linked with the front. I remember my wheel bearing being dirty, and the abs ring having rust. I cleaned up it. And sealed the hub back up with silicone over the seal. And it's better now. Because my speedometer used to go out randomly and I'd have to shut the car of to reset it.

I think the speedo is linked to all four ABS sensors at all four wheels. It works best when there are four but can measure speed using any one of them. I think when it sees discrepancies between the sensors it has to double check somehow and when it only has two sensors it kinda freaks out and shuts down. Theoretically if i go to a one wheel burnout right now i think it will cause my speedo to stop working so I'm gonna test the theory today :)

There are also Vehicle Speed Sensors normally located in the tranny or T/C. From some pics i saw they can be either mechanical gear driven or electronic very similar to the wheel speed sensors only located on the driveline somewhere in the cases

Mine is 97. I have the clutch cancel switch wired up. So that works. But no cruise control. And I really miss that !! I have to get under and see what wires are there on the clutch pedal. If I remember correctly there were 2 wires on the clutch pedal for the clutch cancel switch. I'll take some pics once the snow clears up. Hopefully you can help me

thats my next project, repin for the manual ECU... i have the ECU already just waiting for the right time and some reliable FSM charts for both my 97 and the 96 ECU ill be using...

regardless, i feel like you will still be using a trigger wire from that Cruise box located just below your stereo behind the bezel. The wire i used was White-Red (white with red stripe) You can jumper the wire and just leave it together forever but when you push the clutch the engine will race up instead of canceling the cruise. Thats why i opted to run it over to the clutch switch on top of the clutch pedal. when the pedal is up it completes the circuit and allow the cruise to work and when you push the clutch in it breaks the circuit and cancels the cruise

so wire the W-R wire to an ACC Power wire (my ACC Power wire was B-O black-orange stripe). you also have the option to do it through the clutch switch if you want the kill feature.

I can't imagine this will be any different with your manual ECU because the cruise box is kinda its own unit down there. It sends and receives its own signal to function properly

When I did this, I did not pull any wires from behind the stereo. All wiring, which amounted to maybe four wires IIRC came up from the transmission wiring harness. I think all of this is covered in the thread in my signature.

Man - I had none of these issues when I did my swap. Seriously the only thing that complicated mine was finding the right (4-wire) clutch cancel switch. Wish I could help you out here, but I just did not have any of these issues.

i wired a 4wire clutch switch in my 97 too. that took me a couple hours to figure out! lol

2 grounds, 1 ACC power, and a trigger wire

i haven't seen a three wire work but i wonder if or when the button lights up...

Also, i thought it was pretty neat to wire my RR Diff button up to the dimmer switch so now it lights up and works with the dimmer :)

Had more issues with speedo going out with all four sensors. Now that the back is completely disconnected and cutout. It's good. And the speedo still works

You can download the best EWD from TIS. It's like $15 for 2 days. It's what I used.

Thats what i did also. Im just OCD and i didn't want to run wires through the huge gaping hole. I followed the wire through the engine bay until it came back through the firewall and then i traced it to see where it went. I jumped the same wire i just did it at the source and eliminated an extra 5 ft of wire. When I'm finished there will be no wires coming from my transmission wiring harness through my floor

interesting about your ABS situation... I'm investigating it all today. might just cut all but one of the wires out so its only receiving one signal. Its funny tho, i cut my front ones off and you cut your back ones off :)

Also, when i look on TIS it says there is a owners manual for a 96 4runner but it doesn't suggest there is a Service manual. Does it not enable me to see everything without the subscription?

In order for you to have full access. You need the subscription. I have made a successful felon chart for my 97. And have let others use it. So I am familiar with the process. And if you need any help. I can help you.

What do you recommend for me as far as the cruise control ? The weather right now in NJ is shit so I cannot take any pics of look under to see what I have....

The switch I got from 97 donor truck is I believe either 2 wire or 3. Definitely want 4.

My clutch cancel switch lights up only when I push the button. Then it only turns of once th engine is off

This is how I did my clutch cancel switch

I will take pics of the clutch stuff. Because I really miss cruise control. I'll post once the weather is clear.

Ahh. I see. Haha. I never even thought about doing that. I ran them through the firewall cutout for other wiring, underneath the brake mater cylinder I think. Put them all in exactly the right spot to wire to the pedal sensors.

There was a 3 wire and a 4. Pretty sure I have one or more of each. Will take a look if you are interested. Sold the truck before I got around to figuring this out.

Yes please if you don't mind. I will to. And I'll post pics so you could guide me hahahha. But this WEATHER is horrible. We are getting a nor'easter

Oh hell. Yeah. I heard shi+ is getting real up there. Probably be the third coldest night of the winter here in New Orleans - a freezing 45. :lmao:

Don't even get under the truck. Sit inside and take out your stereo bezel/center dash trim piece. Underneath it you will find your cruise control computer box at the bottom. take the white wire with a red stripe and connect it to any power wire. This makes the cruise computer think you are in drive and will allow it to engage. If you remove the power wire the cruise will stop working. That is as simple as i can put it

Oh ha sweet. What is the color of the wire again you said ? w-r? And good way to make it safe ?where did you tap into for power

I can't remember exactly but i think i used an ACC power wire from my ECT button that got removed with the A/T. I had already relocated the button to the left side of my steering column when i retrofitted the cupholder center console so i already had the wiring running into that area. I also used that same ACC power wire to power the Clutch start cancel button, I believe the wire is Black/Orange stripe (B-O). Use a simple 12v lightbulb tester to double check.

Basically any 12v source. Does the power source simply be , power on when ignition is on. And power off when ignition is off

So I took apart the center console. And there's no cruise control ecu there. MAybe it's under the steering wheel driver kick panel ?
