So I took apart the center console. And there's no cruise control ecu there. MAybe it's under the steering wheel driver kick panel ?
'97 EWD says C/C ECU is center dash. Diagram isn't all that great so I can't be more specific.

Which part did you take apart? It is located directly below the stereo so first remove your shifter trim and then remove your A/C button and faceplate, then the two screws holding the center dash trim piece. you will have to disconnect a few things to get the center dash trim piece out of the way such as, hazard button, rear defrost button, clock, cig lighter, ashtray light... If you removed this center dash trim piece already and did not locate your C/C ecu then i believe we figured out your problem... your missing the ECU, lol. lets go from here, keep me posted

Wow! you are right, its not there. thats super strange, that is exactly where mine sits on my 97 limited. Im not sure where else it could be... I can't seem to find any pictures online so next time i take mine apart ill take a pic.
The way i found mine was by tracing that wire from down underneath the truck where the A/T harness plugged into the old A/T, through the engine bay and firewall and into the cab behind the glovebox. Then it took me a while to realize it went down to my C/C box below my stereo. I could have jumped that same wire underneath the truck at the old A/T harness but i wanted to wire it through the clutch cancel pedal switch.
If you can't find the C/C ecu and you are desperate for cruise then just make the connection below the truck when weather permits but just be careful pushing the clutch in when the cruise is engaged
this is what your old harness looked like and considering the wire goes straight to the C/C ecu from there you should be able to make the connection underneath the truck. Connect the White-Red stripe to the Black-Yellow stripe
Im really surprised your C/C box wasn't there, ill continue trying to find better pics or eventually just take mine back apart... again, haha
There's a sensor there that cancels cc with the first tiniest bit of movement in the clutch pedal. Not sure why you need to be careful.
I'm going to see if the cruise control box is behind the kick panel. I have to have one somewhere because I have c/c. Why do you say becareful pushing the clutch when the cruise is engaged ?
I'm pretty sure that plug in your pic. Is still under my the truck.
You have two options. You can just jump the two wires and the cruise will work or you can jump the two wires through your clutch switch. If you don't go through the clutch switch then when the cruise is on and you push the clutch it will redline your engine and bounce off the rev limiter until you cancel it with the brake or the cancel button.
The clutch cancel switch is connected when the clutch is up and as soon as you push the pedal it breaks the circuit which kills the cruise.
you are sending a 12v signal to the computer through that white-red wire and it is satisfying a condition enabling the cruise to work. If the condition becomes unsatisfied the cruise will not work
Tapping on the brake kills c/c also. Probably 99% you will slam on your brakes first First of I have to find the ecu and that wire !!!!!!
Yes please if you don't mind. I will to. And I'll post pics so you could guide me hahahha. But this WEATHER is horrible. We are getting a nor'easter
Sorry for the delay - yes. I have 2 3-wire models and a four wire model. PM if you are interested in any of them.
The switch that I have is from a 97. Same truck as mine. So it should work.
I just picked up a wrecked 96 4Runner to do a manual trans swap into my 97 4Runner.
My 97 is a Limited model with the push button transfer case, the 96 is an SR5 model with the traditional J-shift transfer case.
Here is a list of what I think I will need from the donor.
-Manual Transmission
-T-case? (Mine is a push-button style, and the donor is a j-shift)
-Diffs??
-Crossmember?
-Driveshafts?
-Wiring harness? (Do I need them? Which ones?)
-Master cylinder
-Slave cylinder
-Pedal assy
-Interior parts
-ECU
Any info you guys could provide would be fantastic!
Always wanted to do this. Was hoping to when I my trans gave out but I had to go with another auto

Yes manual transmission. I cannot answer about the push button transfer case. Probably do able yes. J-shift is simply simple. It's what my 97 had before the swap and it's what it has now. Driveshafts yes. Diffs NO. You do not need differentials for manual swap. Wiring harness ? This depends on the year. 98-02 is plug and play between the auto ecu and manual ecu. 96-97 auto harness and manual harness have different plugs and pin outs. 96-98 you can swap engine harness and repin one dash harness plug. Or you can repon the whole auto engine harness to accept the manual ecu. 98-02 you just swap the ecu and I believe just repin the dash harness.
