My teenage daughter wants to change up her tranny shifter handle and I'm curious if any of you have done this. If so, let me have some pics and ideas please! Figured I'd surprise my daughter for her bday coming up in Feb.

Thx.

You could get it wrapped in leather, but there are no "ready to install" replacements. I have yet to see anyone modify an auto shifter handle. It's on the bottom of a long list of things I would like to change.

The handle itself is part of the entire assembly. Last time I had mine out I did not see a simple way to remove just the handle. It's not like a manual where you just twist off the knob and then put on a new one.

can the A/T knob on the 2WD version be used on the 4WD version?

The 2wd and 4th handles are the same. I changed mines to a 100 series Landcruiser shift knob because the stock knob was hitting my double din head unit when it was opening.

Holy HELL, that's what she wants. She wants the same shifter knob as the one in my 80 series so if I can do this for her, that'd be rather awesome.

Thank you very much for the idea!!!

Yah the 80 & 100 series have the same handle. The stock handles has 2 screws on the front side of the tall handle and the 80/100 series has only 1 bolt. I had to drill a second hole to secure the handle to the 4runner. Not hard to do, but doable.

What did you do with the overdrive on/off button on the original shift handle?

LC100 and LC80 both have OD as well so you can use the LC switch.

For the LC100, you'll need to match the switches. There was a change in the OD switch from the old push switch to the momentary switch in the LC100 but I dunno which year was the change made. After 2002, I think, the OD switch was removed.

Yeah I was wondering that too. If it's a multi-mode transmission, there's two buttons to contend with to try and re-wire.

It’s been awhile, but I stand corrected. Both handles have 2 holes, but the 80/100 series handles are taller than the stock 3rd gen 4Runners. What I did was drill an extra hole on the top of the 80/100 series shifter. The picture below shows what I did. I did this back in 2016, I think. I also didn’t mess with the top spring to make it work

When you removed the original shift handle for the 3rd gen vehicle, did you cut the OD wires and then solder the wires running to the connector plug back together with the replacement handles OD wires?

No, I used the original plug from the landcruiser. Did not solder any wires

I'm wondering about the OD switch too and not quite grokking things. You wired a seperate button in to the console or there is an OD button on the LC handle like the old one?
