Automatic High Beams

The new 4runner has Automatic High Beams (AHB). They will turn on/off the high beams when engaged. So I tested it out the other night and found out it actually does work. They turn off when there enough light detected or your speed drops.

What''s your opinion?
- Do you like them
- I hate them
- More junk to break

Not real useful in the city because they hardly ever come on - and then only for a split second. I can see them being great in a more suburban area.

Love them. It was a pleasant surprise as I did not know I had them.

I live sorta out in the country and I drive a lot at night so they come in handy often and work well IMO.
 
I have found them to dim with oncoming traffic and go back to high beam too quickly as they do not sense all following traffic. As a result I get flashed by the following traffic. Sometimes they dim b/c of reflections from road signs.

^--- this. Though even in suburbs I never see them come on unless I'm in an area completely devoid of ambient light. I disabled them after a few weeks.

Why would you be using your high beams in the city, or a suburban area for that matter anyways? This is for rural areas, highways with no streetlights situations. I get the stock headlights suck on these trucks, but high beams in the city?:noidea:

That seems like the exact environment where they'd be most useful. Dark and twisty rural area so you'd want your high beams on, as soon as it senses an approaching car it switches them off. Have you tried it in this situation and it doesn't work well?
 
I prefer to be in control of the lights.
I drive over 150,000 miles annually (truck driver), preferably at night, mostly 2-lane rural highways. I seldom need to use high beams. Same in my personal vehicles. And I live in rural AZ, driving single track dirt roads to get home.
Few seem to know how to use their lights anymore. Just go as bright as possible, too bad for everyone else.
For me, the stock 4runner headlights are fine.

I can see approaching car lights around a curve or below a hill well before sensor detects oncoming headlights. When I did use the auto on, it ended up not turning off until oncoming car was right there. On straight roads, it worked fine. Not a diss on Toyota auto on, they all may operate the same way.
 
Just another thing to go wrong! If you can't control your headlights, or keep in your lane, or pay attention so you don't crash into the car in front - then you shouldn't be driving. All these things make people less attentive; which causes more problems. You going to trust these systems from a company that can't get a relatively simple entune - nav system to work properly. Or, the airbag fiasco? Go ahead and good luck.
 
It's an interesting feature but not very well executed imo, they are convenient for me but apparently not for some other people. I tried them on a 100km stretch of a rural 2 lane highway and got flashed multiple times by others. It either couldn't detect some people's shitty headlights, or it wouldn't detect the car behind and go back to high beams too quickly. I haven't really used it since, I just leave it in low beam most of the time anyway.

The adaptive cruise control is my favorite part of the tss-p system.

I sort of had the same thought about the AHB. I can see the car coming. Also I'm a bit of a control freak when it comes to my car doing thing it "thinks" are right. I paid for it do what I want! It sort of freaks me out and it can be distracting too.

However there are plenty of others that seem appreciate the convenience. The good news is I don't need to turn it on.

You might be confusing the chicken with the egg.
