I have been having issues with starting my Runner nearly since I got it. I have to masauge the shifter around the mutual position in order to start it. Also it does not go into gear unless I put it in 3 first then back to D before the D lights up. Any suggestions? Thanks

Sounds like the neutral safety switch.

Not sure where it's located but I would think in the shifter area under the console.

Neutral Safety Switch - Toyota (84540-51010)

New OEM aren't cheap but you can get used ones, remanufactured, or aftermarket.

I have found this site to be very useful, BUT I guess you're not very patient since your issue hasn't been seen by someone that can help and not solved fast enough for you in only a day or so!!

The members here are not here for just you, they either want to learn from the knowledge here and or help others with their experience and most here at least know how to do the research to help themselves with what they found out from the vast info here and then they contribute their new found knowledge to help others!!

So if you truely beleive what you posted then leave the site!!!

Ok Skip. Thanks for the information but I don't think you need me to tell you about public shaming. I finally get a reply on a topic that no one seems to have any idea about and no its not been a day or two Ive had this post alone on here since mid February.
Obviously it does sound like the NPSS but where its located is a mystery. Ive had the console completley apart yesterday and was underneith to inspect the transmission and everything online is related to everything besides the 2004 so what do I do? I am not about to take the thing to the Dealership and let them rape me.

Thank you for taking your time to reply Skip and for the links. Im getting overwhelmed with this as it is my daily driver and I need this for getting to work tomorrow morning. I had the console apart yesterday and sprayed electrical contact cleaner in through all the plugs I could reach and blew them all out with the air compressor but still no improvement. I also got up underneath the transmission and everything but couldnt find anything that looked like the typical nutural position safety switch. The links you shared have no picture so I dont know if its in the console or on the transmission. Im frustrated and angry at the same time as you can see from my post. Im going to get out there in my yard on the ground and try again today in this snowstorm as I must get to work tomorrow. Thank you for your help.

Mark, understand your frustration and the need to get your rig going, I wasn't trying to shame you, but I checked all of your 6 posts at the time of my reply and only found 2 posts where you asked about this issue before replying and both were posted yesterday.

That being said the only other location for the switch I could think of would be in the transmission itself, so I spend the last hour or so researching to see if I could find out if that is so and unfortunately it seems that is where it is.

Take a look at this diagram linked below, look for the general shape of the switch and then you will see..."Refer to 84-01 (PNC 84540)... by it, there's no mention in the listed items at that link for the switch...but the shape of the item/switch and number 84540 is the correct part number for the switch so I'm pretty sure this is where it's located, I have ran out of time to do the research so I couldn't find a better exploded diagram or procedure for what needs to be done to replace the switch, good luck.

Edit: Also here's the link to where I found the diagram above, you may be able to find a better diagram than the one I posted but I looked at many of them but not all and that one seems to be the best.

Ok so I called my local parts store here in Nova Scotia $488.52 for this little f%=÷*€g part? What a total rip off.

Ok so apparently the nutural position safety switch is located on the outside of the transmission according to the junkyard dealer who has one off of a 2004 for $75
