Automatic Shifting

Hi all!

I just purchased a 1993 4Runner V6 Auto, and I was wondering what your thoughts are on why it will not shift to the next gear until 4000rpms. Is this normal for this vehicle? I feel that it should have shifted gears already but it still doesn't. Is it because I'm used to shifting at 3000rpm in my Nissan 240sx Manual?

Is it easy to replace the Oil Temp Gauge? I'm not very mechanically inclined, but I think I can do it, 'coz I've done it on my 240sx.

is the shifting at 4k after the vehicle has warmed up? if not its common to all toyota engines that they tend to hold the lower gears longer till eveything warms up.

if the vehicle has warmed up, it may be due to old gear oil or clogged filters.

is the ECT POWER switch on?

Yes, the ECT is powered on. I asked our mechanic at work and he said that he will check the tranny fluid, just in-case.

turn off the ECT switch, and shifting should be back to "normal"....all it does is raise the shifting points of the trans for a supposedly power mode...... just uses more gas IMO
