Automatic Trans shifter

1990 Tr4 4x4 w/ auto

Took to shop for repair and mechanic expressed concern that the shifter does not lock in the park position. Would the problem be in the shifter assembly or the transmission shift linkage? It's a do it myself if in the problem is in the console auto shift assembly whereas if it is in the trans linkage I will be headed for a transmission shop?

Comment and or suggestions appreciated!!

Do you have a manual? I would first look to see if it just needed a minor adjustment in the linkage that runs from the shifter to the trans.
