Automatic VS Manual ??

Manual all the way. I'm sure this is a shock to most of you that i prefer manuals.

Its just better, the driving expierence is more fun, and your more involved with it. If you dont care for those things, there is also better MPG, no need for the dreaded tranny cooler, and the fact that most cars aren't manual anymore (in the US) and it is now "cool" to have a manual car.

I currently own both and it is personal preference. I really like the manual and the benefits it has, but I also enjoy the automatic and the comfort it provides.

Automatics are a lot more common though.

it's also cool to be emo and own a ipad in the us of a.....

and you only save mpg's if you drive like a granny and cut out alot of city driving, imo most stick owners prefer having the feel of power at their finger tips and drive ther trucks like that, so in the end might end up being worse for fuel eco, as the only difference is shift points and if your zipping around you're shifting at much higher rpm's then the auto tranny would.

i'll give you the tranny cooler in exchange for clutch's, 1 tranny cooler over the life of the trans vs maybe 2-3 clutches in the life of the manual.


and more fun is reative, i have more fun sipping my coffee and smoking my cig's with my free hand all day long instead of fumbling around.

but again it's all personal preference, mech speaking they are about the same with only slight advantages to each, in the end you have to ask yourself what you'd prefer, you can't really claim that stick is better then auto and visa versa as they are both good but just for different things and are good for different people because of those reasons.
 
I have towed, launched and loaded all kinds and sizes of boats in my time and have used both man and auto trannys to do so. The bottom line is that an auto is much better for the job by far. I also prefer an auto for off road.
Cool factor? That's for the kids. JMHO.....of course.

Perfectly said, it is down to what your motivation is when you drive.
I want to enjoy, relax, and explore so i think an Auto would be best suited for me.
I definitely dont mind driving manual as I drive a 18 speed truck for a living. But if you want to relax and smoke that cigar and sip that beer then auto is the way to go. hands down.
If you are a serious wheeler and finding the 4x4 forte for your vehicle then manual seems better.(with the exception of rock crawling where you need to steer and maneuver alot more, having free hands would make it easier)
 
It is also about gearing...

There is more to this question than clutches and drinking coffee.

I have a 1996 Limited and a 1997 Sr5 V6 5 speed with the locker.

The biggest difference between them is the gearing. At 100 km/h the Limited runs at 2000 rpm, and the SR5 runs at 2400 rpm. The 5 speed has way more get up and go, and I bet it will be easier off road as first gear seems a fair bit lower as well.

I prefer the 5 speed as I can put on bigger tires and still be geared lower than the auto in the Limited which makes for more nimble in the forest. The downside is that I am pretty sure that I cannot get the SR5 to cross 160 km/h on the highway like the Limited...

The first gear is considerably lower: 3000 rpm is 28 km/h in the SR5 and 38km/h in the Limited. Also handy on the trail.

My goal is to never buy another vehicle with an automatic transmission, which seems to be getting more difficult as the years go by.

I've seen a lot more automatic transmissions die faster than manuals. I'll take long-term durability over comfort or convenience.

This is a stupid thread; I'm glad it didn't last long in 2011; hopefully it dies fast in 2018 too.
Neither one is better; both are better.
I loved driving my auto, and I currently love driving my manual. I'd love to have one of each [emoji12][emoji1598]
 
Let A be the set of people who might steal your 4Runner. Let B be the subset of A that can drive a manual transmission.

Thus, Not B are those who can drive an automatic.

I submit that Not B > B, and increasingly so as time progresses. Therefore, your 5-speed less likely to be stolen.

Lamentably, this is not reflected in insurance rates.
 
I can tell autos from manuals by the sound they make when they drive by. I can say I'll never buy an automatic anything again because I'll only ever buy an electric new car. Any 4x4 I get will be 20 years old and manual. No modern electronics for me. I say that now but maybe when I'm old and decrepit I'll get an auto. But that won't happen until I lose all my testosterone.

I hit that spot much earlier than expected. My '01 is the firs auto that I've ever owned. Never going back to a manual DD. But I've got a manual in the garage to feed the need when it arises.

Each seem to have advantages in certain situations. Personally, I prefer my Auto.

This guy has quite a few good videos out there.
