Auxiliary fuel tank

I gotta 1990 4Runner and have been looking around for a way to upgrade my fuel carrying capacity cause 14 gallons isn't much for an offroad vehicle and would like to up that a bit. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? I've seen some good looking tanks but they are all gravity fed and I guess that isn't legal here in California. Anybody know how to get around this problem?

i've looked around for the 3rd gen, and not had any luck either. I have heard of others putting a MA70 Supra tank in the rear after the spare tire removal, but not sure how the fitment is on that, and i'm thinking the supra is only a few gallons bigger. As far as being legal, you might check w/ manafre, i'm pretty sure they have them for the land cruisers, and being in CA, they may be able to tell you the ins and outs of street legality here. If you come up w/ anything post back, i'm very interested in a solution.

Hmm. I just used a rust free metal plates end made a tank out of that. Had to change the exhaust system to mount it next to the original fuel tank.

It has +100l capacity. I modified the filler so I could use 2 seperate hoses to the fuel tanks, for filling up.
Just cut one hole on the side of the filler pipe and put pipe of the same size as the original and welded on.

Then I found an fuel pump from 6.5GM and used for pumping from the aux tank to the original one.


Also, instead of making your own, you could find plastic fuel tanks from boat workshop, they've been used in Iceland with good success. By buyin one of those you'd get aux fuel meter and the pump.

But those are just some ideas.

You might be able to take the spare tire down and put one tank there. but it'll be smaller than the tank you could fit on the other location.

I don't know about Iceland, but the OP is in the U.S./California, and would have to be able to pass yearly emissions testing.
The OEM design is certified to pass if functioning correctly, but any "creative engineering" solution to add a second tank most likely wouldn't pass.

Toyota sold 4runners and Prados with aux fuel tanks aswell. Probably expensive but could work.
But still, needed to modify the exhaust system.

I can't understand why an aux tank would have affects on the emission test?

You could always go low tech and just pick up a coupleJerryCans. Sure you'd have to stop and pour them into the tank, but how hard is that really? and you wouldn't have any issue with stale gas, custom fabrication, possible emissions/vacuum issues.

Also less weight to always carry around and extra expense for the few times you need the extra fuel. Put the cost of the extra tank work into a spare tire / gas can rear bumper.

This company in Australia makes 130lt (34 gallon) fuel tanks and 60lt (15 gallon) aux tanks for your rig.

Could be expensive to import, but might be worth emailing them for more info.
I know that these are available through ARB in Australia, but I'm not sure if ARB-USA can sell them.

Modern emissions standards include standards for evaporative emissions, such as gas evaporating from the tank, even the carburetor float bowls on old style engines.
