Available HU ??? with Navigation / DVD / BackUp Camera

What are the available aftermarket head unit available that offers a perfect bolt on fit for a generation 4?

I DO NOT want utilized a HU adapters since 99% of all adapter sucks. The only adapter worthwhile are the 1% of custom made adapters.

The CD S/N is the next most important feature as I will be givin up a Sony CDX-C90 to go multimedia.

I am also considering OEM HU. Which OEM stock Nav / DVD HU offer RCA out capabilities? I also DO NOT want to convert speaker level output into RCA.


Any input is appreciated. Cost is not a concern. So far Eclipse is preferred brand.

Not mandatory - however it would be nice for such HU to be compatible with the steering wheel buttons.

Like M. Jagger says, "you can't always get what you want".

You are looking for an aftermarket HU w/ navigation and you will have to use some sort of adaptor. I have only seen about 10% of the adaptors and I have actually like 75% of them. 5% of the 10% I have seen did completly suck leaving the remaining 20% to rate as acceptable. Of all adaptors available the folks on this forum tend to bring up Metra and Scosch aproximatly 99% of the time so I would use one of the two.

The quality of the stock stuff is hardly worth the money compared to the quality of the aftermarket HU's.

Money no object...pick a car stereo install shop and let them do the instal with the Pioneer or Alpine HU's and all the options you want are probably available.
 
Metra, Bestkits, and American International are the top 3 brands for kits. I'm not a fan of scosch or however you spell it.

I've installed with basically all brands of kits you can imagine and the 3 i mentioned are by far top of the line and best you are going to get. Believe it or not, even these "custom" kits that your stereo shop installs for you are normally modified pre-made kits.
 
Let me rephrase.

If any - which OEM HU offers?
(1) Navigation
(2) DVD playback
(3) BackUp Camera
(4) RCA preouts with at least 4volts

If any - which aftermarket HU offers?
(1) Direct bolt on
(2) steering wheel control


Obviously - most if not all - aftermarket HU will offer what a OEM does and more. The challenge of aftermarket is the (1) HU adapter and/or (2) steering wheel control.

As with all/most HU adapter kits. It offer the DIN sleeve mount which I hate to the bone. I may elect a machine shop custom make/weld a bracket out of aluminum. A direct bolt on bracket. Bolt on the HU (double DIN) to the aluminum bracket. Then Bolt the aluminum bracket to the vehicle chasis just like the OEM HU. Could get pricy.

As for the steering wheel control - ????? I may have to settle for a wireless.
 
With your toyota, you won't use the DIN sleeve. Check out metraonline.com and you'll see how the install kit works for your 4runner.

That adapter is EXACTLY what I am trying to stay away from. It is a POS.

Don't take this the wrong way. I am not bashing at you - just the HU adapter.

I am simply pointing out that such kit are soo poorly made that should one get into a rear end fender bender. The HU will come flying out right at you in the face. A friend who was at a dead stop and was rear ended hard at 35-40mph had to eat his radio because he used one of these pathetic HU adapters. That is a senario I do not want to repeat. Ever.

There is a reason why OEM HU are "BOLTED ON"
 
Hmm.. for some reason metra took down their double din kit for toyota 4runners. Or maybe I sent you the wrong link. Let me find the double din kit and I'll post it or maybe someone else has the link for it?

But double din units use factory brackets. They are just 2 peices of plastic that snap on to each side to fill in the gaps.

Was the installation stright forward with original OEM harness?? Did you have to splice any wiring??
 
About three or four wires for the Nav controls and Camera. I think it was reverse, speed pulse, and one wire for the light dimming when the headlights are on. There was something else but I don't remember the details.

most double din units should work with steering wheel controls. Pioneer does, Alpine does, Kenwood does...and all double dins are going to mount up with the factory brackets.
 
If you are referring to other Sony Xplod junk - Then Yes.


However a "CDX-C90" by far .................. is NO junk.

For Mobile Audio Enthusiasts especially for Sound Quality - This is the best of the best.

I don't there there is anything out there nowadays that even comes close to this unit in term of SQ.

Definitely not the Pioneer AVIC-Z1. Seen plenty of those install with a cheap fill in HU adapter.

The fill in adapters is the plastic around the unit but I'm pretty sure the brackets bolt on behind these.
 
OUA, based on your feedback, it sounds to me like you're never going to find what you're looking for.

You can go ahead and waste your money on a stock POS unit, or you can go with a quality aftermarket, ie. Alpine or Pioneer. Look through this forum, there are plenty of examples with pics of double din installs.

If you go with stock replacement unit, like a Toyota nav unit, then it will fit right in, plain and simple. Your problem is that the stock Toyota HU's are wider than standard aftermarket double din HU's. The result is you WILL have to use some sort of filler. For that, you can A.) create your own faceplate of plastic or powdercoated sheet metal, or B.) buy the Metra trim kit, which are two small fillers for either side that attach to the stock brackets which you will use to install your aftermarket HU. These will fill in the sides and is perfectly fine to maintain a stock look.

You referred to the fillers (ie. for the pioneer z1) as cheap... but they are made of plastic just as the rest of the dash is. So then, is the truck itself just cheap?

I am gonna go aftermarket like spider5 suggested - possible Eclipse so it is a bolt on and also retain steering wheel control. If necessary I will have a custom bracket fabricated out of aluminum.


As for the plastic fillers in the pioneer Z1 pictures. There is a distinct difference between cheap plastic and quality plastic. Check the plastics used in ford's dash then check the plastics use in toyota dash. You will see what I am referring too. I just don't think the Metra kit live up to my standards. If one can yank a HU out of the dash with a good hold and a quick pull. It ain't good enough. It needs to be more secured.

Why spend $2500 for a HU and then turn around and spend $25 for a Metra adapter? I just don't understand some folks line of thinking.

Was it because your budget was only $2525 and you simple ran out of money?????
