Agreed, 20kb is plenty big if you now what you're doing when it comes to resizing photos and watching your bits/colors. Not a dis...just a comment. Decent images can be had at small sizes.

For instance, the T4R.ORG image at the top left of the pages here, is only 23k and is a healthy 362x182 size.

Yes, you can. Go to "USER CP" and then click "EDIT OPTIONS" and just scroll down...you can select to NOT see anyone's avatar.

Sporks suggestion is a good one. If you want cool animated avatars it takes a little more file size. Mine is right at the limit and it is very simple. Lets do 2mb and then we can start really getting creative.
