Avoid the Amp Research Powered Running boards...

I have decided to start doing updates to my 4Runner, it is a 2012 SR5. I decided to go high end on the running boards and decided to get the powered running boards. Well, it turns out even though they say the fit a 2012 SR5 they do not. I spent 10 minutes on the phone with the amp research guy who was trying to tell me there were 2 different types of 2012 SR5 body trim packages (there is not unless one is an overseas version that I am unaware of).

If you do want one, you basically can only get it if you have a 2014+ specific type of SR5. My advice would just avoid this company all together, they were pretty rude and didn't know what they were talking about. Anyway, Shockworks here I come.

ShRockworks is an awesome company and pleasant to deal with. Order ahead of time because they are busy and will take lil while to get your sliders. Trust me - those are worth the wait. GL

There are two different styles actually, the LE and SR5 have different rocker panels than the trail, in the early 5th Gen's at least

There are 3 body styles (Limited, Trail, and SR5) BUT not 2 types of SR5 body styles from 2012 like the guy from Amp Research was trying to tell me. There is however the 2010-2013 SR5 that look the same then 2014-present that look another way but he was adamant it didn't have to do with the year.

It comes down to body cladding and as far as I know and have found looking, all of the body cladding on the 2010-2013 SR5 is the same and it changes in the 2014 model. Long story short, it doesn't fit the early 5th Gen SR5 or Limited. It may work with the Trail but I wouldn't trust what they say enough to try it.

Probably worked out for the best in the long run for me anyway since the Shockworks are 1/2 the price.

Thanks! Just ordered them this evening. I've read on here 6-8wks is the norm but am really hoping for the 6.

Also, this hole time I've read it, said it, googled it, and typed it as Shockworks (without an R). Funny how the mind works.

again, actually yes, there are. the Canadian market sr5 has the same rocker panels as the US market TE. glad you found something that works for your purposes - Shrockworks sliders are hardly the same as powered running boards though

I agree with that! I was on the fence about what direction to go with the 4Runner and was between the powered panels and the Shrockworks. I personally don't want any type of running board but my wife insists that I get them for her ease of getting into/out of the 4Runner. I figured the powered would give it the look of them not having them which is what I wanted.


HOWEVER, I've been reading a lot this evening and now am more frustrated with the Amp Research people and the people at the store I went to to get them installed. As it turns out, they should have been able to install them easily had they just removed the Rocker Panels..... Pretty big fail on both of their part. Oh well. I was on the fence after talking with some people about them. I guess they break pretty easy if you try to go off road with them.

Interesting! I concede my ignorance here. I didn't realize there was a different Canadian version. When the guy told me that I spent a solid hour looking at every 2010-2013 I could find for sale (East to West coast) online and every one of them had the same rocker panel. I never thought to look in Canada. The irony of all ironies here is that I will still have to remove that rocker panel to put on the Shrockworks sliders. Oh well, still saving me $800 to go with the Shrockworks.

You can always remove and trim the rocker panel so you won't have that "naked" look on the sides. That's what I did with my 2011. There's a good write up on here with lots of pictures on how to do it. It's very straightforward and easy to do on your own. Look up "5th gen rocker panel trim".

Even with the Shrockworks you'll still have to remove that rocker panel trim, hence the reason they sell the Trail rocker panel on their site.

The OEM and Shrockworks trim is totally not worth it IMO. I went the OEM route and if I had to do it over again I would have used that $400 elsewhere Just put on a pair of rock sliders and be done with it. They will cover up the ugliness.

sorry I had to. I've heard a lot of negative reviews from people I know that have these on all sorts of different vehicles.
