Awesome Gas Mileage

I'm driving home Sunday night, it's a beautiful night. A bit of a tail wind and the sun just about to set. It's a paved country road that's nearly straight as an arrow, no hills. Central Alberta at it's finest. I put the cruise control at 60 mph to see what kind of mileage I can get in almost perfect conditions. The nav system had me maxed out at 30 mpg for 20 minutes, and with the lowest dip at 26 mpg for 40 mins. I'm freakin' impressed.

Remembering this is the computer, and I haven't filled up yet to measure it for certain. But the gas gauge is sure backing it up. The trip ended up 93 miles on a little more than 1/8 tank.

That's a heck of a tail wind. We've been very pleased with our mileage and typically get a couple mpg higher than it's rated, especially while highway driving at speeds higher than 60mph. But I haven't seen it get anywhere near 30mpg unless you reset the computer coasting downhill, LOL.
 
wow, i got maybe 20mpg with a fresh tank of gas going 75mph on flat highway for 15 miles. other than that, this thing is a hog. almost as bad as my Xterra with 285s.

If mine was getting milage like that I think I'd take it in for a check up. Mine is averaging 20-22 mixed driving. You have any mods affecting yours?

More than likely that road has a slight downhill. May not look like it, but aerodynamics alone won't let that number happen. Also, your methodology is flawed because most gas is used accelerating from a stop. Since you were already moving, you took that out of the equation.

i get 18 mpg on the display all day long and that is driving like a freaking granny !!! my dodge one ton is as good on fuel as this thing and it has gobs more power.. sigh .. 80(

was really hoping for more out of this new 4runner

Wow. I was going to ask what happens when you turn around and drive up Banff until I saw this. Missed it on the first read through. I thought I was doing good gaining 1-2 mph when I moved from Oregon to Colorado. I've not seen anything remotely close to what you achieved!

only shrockworks sliders and destination AT tires, stock size. the tires are only 1 lb more per tire, and the sliders should not affect gas mileage, at 130lbs (approx.) total.
 
Mileage is very impressive compared to my former FJ Cruiser, which driving the same routes (Work, running kids to various sports, grocery getting, etc) got an avg of 18.5 mpg keeping it at 60 mph.

The Limited gets 22.6 mpg with the same routes. :thumb3:

2011 SR5 2wd

Shoot, I get roughly 23 mpg with mixed city and highway miles. I consider that pretty good. Mine's an all stock 2011 SR5 in 2wd. I'll probably throw some mods on it soon though. I hope it doesn't hurt the mpg too bad.

Disconnect the battery cable on the ground side with 10mm open end wrench, for 5 minutes or more to reset ECU's.

Warning....You'll have to reset clock,radio/nav presets,windows,ect and it will also immediately stall the first time you start it.

Or, if you don't want to wait, just disconnect the battery, and turn your headlights/tail lights on.. That'll drain the remainder of the juice quickly.
 
Here are the things I think that helped out;

Tail Wind
Air Conditioning off
Windows closed
Tires at 44lbs (thanks Mike)
CC at 58 mph
Cool ambient air
Pure gas (no ethanol)

I will probably make the same trip next week, and if conditions are the same, I'll take some pics of the nav mileage report.

If it makes you guys feel any better, my mileage for the tank has dropped back to about 22 now that driving is back to the real world.

I've got an a LE, brand new, stock with 900 miles on it now (4 miles when I got it) I've filed up a few times and compare the computer to manual calculations and they are within 1-2mpg. Driving full on granny with Eco light always on wll get me about 19.8 in the city (fairly flat) and driving normally (some quick accelerations, mostly moderate/granny) will get me about 18mpg.

I wish it was better but is about what I expected when I bought it. I plan on changing tires/rims in the near future which will probably give me 2-3mpg less.

I have to say I love my rig. It's got plenty of power for my applications and goes above and beyond what I need it to do. If I was looking strictly for fuel efficiency I'd be driving a Prius. If I wanted a good 4wd grocery getter city vehicle I'd drive a BMW X5 diesel (wife's car, awesome for what it is).

I hope that I can get a little more mpg once my rig is fully broken in but won't cry if it doesn't. My xtrerra the I had before this got a 15mpg average mixed driving and it was way smaller and did not come close in HP.
