Awful exhaust smell. Need help 97 Limited

I have searched multiple forums and cant find a fix. My exhaust smells awful, kind of like gas but with a mix of nasty. Its not a sulphur smell. Cat was welded on side where it had cracked but this started over two years after that. Occasionally i smell gas on start up, when its cold out, but ive read this is normal. Any advice would be appreciated. Im at a loss

This might be totally irrelevant, but I had a decently strong gas smell that was very present with the fans on. Didn't have time to find the problem so I took it to the dealer too get diagnosed. Turns out my smell was caused by the very cold weather so I was running very rich for a few days. Once it was warmer the smell has totally gone away. Hope yours is as easy as that

Yeah i have that too. But this is a constant smell from echaust. Hot or cold. Its unbearable to stand outside the truck. No smoke, or anything dripping out. I have no clue

How long have you had the smell for? Did you fill up shortly before it started?

No ive had the smell for about 6 months now. Had a cel light come on 2 months ago. Code was for an o2 sensor but it went back off next day.

Bad o2. Causing cat to build up and smell from running rich. Replacing cat and muffler can help .

Ill go get one and try it, thought somebody else may have experienced this and know for sure before i start throwing parts at it. Any thoughts on carcoal canister?

Do you have a check engine light?

For what its worth I have had failing sensors and a completely cracked charcoal canister and never had a smell coming from it that bad.

No cel. It came on for one day and went off the next. Code read O2 sensor. Ive seen threads on here referring to same problem, but no respone on the fix. Good to know on canister, thanks. Thats an expensive one.

Yea the canister I replaced with a used good one. I would never a new one of those, crazy expensive. The fix in those threads should have been to replace the o2 sensor. That was my fix. My car smelled super bad but my o2 had been bad for months and cel was on. After replacing it, took a good 3-4 months for smell to go away. I still smell it every once in awhile after hard throttle. I use it as an excuse for the wife to let me upgrade my exhaust. LOL.

First try a different brand of gas. Some gas has a higher Sulfur content than others.

Out here if I use Giant or Conaco brands mine will stink withing a day or so.
I stick with Chevron or Shell and don't have the problem
