Awful MPG on a new 5th Gen

Hey guys, does anyone else have bad gas mileage on a brand new 5th gen? I picked up my '17 SR5 PREMIUM (sorry, not limited) about 3 months ago and have been averaging less than 13 mpg combined after 3,000 miles. I live in the city but my commute is about 25 highway miles daily. The think is just absolutely sucking down gas.No mods or anything.

Anyone else have similar issues/advice?

Are you computing this or are you relying on the readout in the dash? The dash readout is not exact and generally unreliable.

without knowing driving conditions it is hard to tell, but I have never had worse than 15. Normally break-in period is the worst mileage. Mine got better after 8 to 10k miles.

I now average 19, but it is 2WD

I'm getting an average of 17-18 mpg mix driving. with a lift, bigger tires and roof rack. Are you going by the gauge cluster or calculating it yourself?

I average 17.5 mixed driving with 3/2 inch lift, 285 KO2s and rock sliders. It may be your driving habits.

I have to disagree. If you reset it when you fill up it's pretty accurate. For the sake of testing I reset it as well as calculated my MPG for a few tanks and it was usually spot on or within .1 MPG.

To the OP, 13mpg doesn't sound right, even with city driving. The only time I get less than that is while towing, and that's usually around 12.5-13. Do you drive with a lead foot? That could be a contributing factor.

Well next time you fill up reset both the dash readout and your trip odo, then the tank after that you'll know for sure! But it's kinda one of those things where you want to remain blissfully ignorant, even though you know it might be true.

My dash MPG is very accurate. Always within .1mpg to calculated (before adjusting for tire height).

13mpg is bad. Is your parking brake on? My typical mpg for city driving is about 16. My commute is 7 miles with 50% city traffic. Takes ~12 minutes for reference to typical speeds. Highway cruising I get around 20. When it was totally stock I saw 22-23mpg highway and about 18 city. Better than EPA figures for both.

It's a very accurate AVERAGE. You should probably calculate manually to figure out exactly what mpg each tank yeilds

Even leadfooting I get over 15 with lift and 275's in the city. Somethings off at 13mpg.

Good thread. I've been having the same thoughts. I've had mine 60 days, ~2500 miles, and the OBC reads 14.8. City driving and I drive like an old man.

My 2010 got a very consistent 19 in town and at least 22 hwy at 70+ mph. Hell it would get 24-25 mph at 60 mph.

It is new. It is winter. I do not idle to warm up. I fill to the click always. Habits are identical to the 2010. I sure hope this is not a precursor to the mpg of the new one.

What I do wonder is: If this remains constant, and Toyota says "17 mpg city", what do I do about it?

I'm up to 800 miles now 15.5 was my last tank.
Should go up from there.

I thought it took awhile for that dash measurement to become 'accurate'. I reset the thing every thousand kilometres (6500) on it now, 2017 Off Road model. Under 5K it seemed to be all over the map, but now it seems to be settled at 17Litres for 100Klms ( 16.5 mpg ? ) I drive primarily City too, been dropping the stick into 4wd alot this winter too (still on stock tires). So sounds like you might have a legit beef !

I get 15-16 depending on driving. I accelerate slightly faster than the “Eco” light wants. ~4” front lift 3” rear, Prinsu Roof Rack, SSO Bumper with a steel cable winch, 285 KO2s, 4wd ‘16 SR5, . If you have a heavy foot I could see 13 around town easily. But you’d also be drag racing from every stop most likely. Or you’ve got something wrong.
