This aught to make your brain hurt...
Over the past few days I've been working on installing an Aussie rear locker. Got it installed, and went to slide the axle shafts back in. Right side went in smooth, flush with the flange with no force. The left side how ever went it and stopped short about 1/4 inch from the flange. It is splined into the diff at this point, but no matter how I wiggled it, it just bounced off something. I couldn't tell what it was hitting. I started the flange bolts and pulled the shaft in very slowly. it took almost no force to close the gap. This obviously worried me because you shouldn't have to pull in a shaft. I loosened the bolts and the shaft stayed flush. It pulled out with ease, and I could push it back in no problem as long as I didn't go past 1/4 inch...then I had to draw it in again.
2 interesting things...
1. I remember noticing the backing plate was loose compared to the axle shaft. I could wiggle the two independently. I figured it was because the bearing wasn't seated against the flange but I'm not positive how that bearing is located or seated. This may be normal when not installed in the housing?
2. The aussie locker clicks much louder when turning left (the side I had issues with).
Any ideas?
