AZ "Backroad to Crown King" difficulty

Anyone taken this trail from Lake Pleasant to Crown King recently?

I have an invitation to join a group of Yoda's this coming Saturday.

My truck is stock except for tires. I was saving this trail until I got rocksliders at a minimum. But, I really want to go.

I've read that most of the trail is easy/moderate except for the last 3-4 miles. This section is said to be difficult, especially because of "loose rocks".

I think I'm going unless somebody talks me out of it. I'm just worried that I will be the only stock Yoda, and I don't want to hold up the group. I don't know yet what other types of vehicles are going. And, I willbe P/O'd if I come home with body damage!

Devil on my shoulder says "Go for it", Angel on the other shoulder says "Wait for the sliders"...hmmm.

I would appreciate anyone's feedback that has taken it in last 6 months.

Buddy of mine did it in stock 2011 Chevy silverado had no problems or body damage. Don't know who your going with but most people are real nice and would have no problem helping you if you get stuck. I say go for it.

Crisis averted!

Trip postponed for a couple weeks. I have time to get my sliders. Whew!

Now, should I get Stubbs or Savage...hmmm. :)

Hey there,
the Crown King back road is looking pretty good. The last 4-5 miles which used to be tough are now the easiest portion of the trail due to a tractor grading it. The one big obstacle no longer exists.
That being said the road is always changing and spots that used to be no big deal are now a little more difficult.
I've done it when the 4runner was stock up to now and it's always doable and it's always challenging enough to keep it interesting. Have fun!

We just did the trail on New Years Eve a few weeks ago.

Hey there,

Small world, I linked your trips above in my thread!

I think you must know the guys that invited me on this trip. They referenced you by name and forwarded your trip links to me. Funny.

And yes, you have a great girlfriend if she airs down your tires for you...ha. Your photos are great by the way. Really enjoyed them.

Glad to see your local, maybe we can hit a trail sometime. After I get my sliders for peace of mind... :)

It's a small world when it comes to exploring the backroads of AZ. :thumb3:

Anytime you can eat a burger and drink a beer in a 100 year old bar at the end of a trail it's a good one.
I was perusing the google analytics and saw the links above so I thought I'd share the trail condition.
Have fun on the trail and post up some pics!

Went the back way to crown king but it was like 2 years ago and in a rhino. Absolutely awesome trail with the bonus of that sweet turn of the century saloon at the top. Very fun and good time of year to go if ya dont mind a little chill at the top and possible snow... makes it more fun i think. No way in he11 would i have taken my runner through that stock. It would have beaten the crap out of it. Think big boulders on a narrow trail. Thats pretty strange they graded it now tho. And kinda a shame.

But anyways, have a good time man!

Tim those pictures are awesome! And those are some bad lookin runners i might add:) looks like u had a blast. Very jealous.

You guys are making me think I should open up the trip to the T4R crew...hmmm.

This posts has plenty of "lookers", but not a lot of "posters".

Anyone interested?

I still don't have sliders and I just dropped a lot of coin in the runner this month. Brakes, BL, wheels, both half shafts, front bumper... and I need to replace all my belts too:( Its still my DD at this point so I'd like to get sliders before I take her out. Let me know if ya lock down a date or other trips around the valley you plan on cuz I def would like to go on one.

I did this run back in 08 with a mostly stock 96 4runner. I think I had one or two spots where I scrapped but nothing major.
