Just seems like you could find one closer to home instead of paying to fly out and then paying to drive it all the way back home.. there are plenty of decent 4runners in Cali..

I've been looking literally every day from San Diego to Sac for over 6 months. Most are neglected and disgusting. The few I've seen online that look good are gone in hours while I'm stuck at work. I found one in OC that was very clean, only 85k, SR5, 2wd, he sold it for $11k!!!

Starting in 2012, it took me about 8 months of checking CList and Auto Trader every day. I looked all over the west: OR, CA, NV, AZ, even UT. Ended up buying one off local L.A. CList, from a guy that had purchased it a week before in Tucson and driven it out, then decided to offload it. Never thought of Facebook though.

I'm gonna say you may need to have already had the vehicle pass CA smog test before they'll register it. In CA, the smog test results are transmitted directly from the test machine to the DMV. You may be able to handle the entire registration online, w/o an office visit.

I had this issue with my wife's 05 Sequoia we bough a few months ago.
I live in Houston, TX and the truck was registered in Tennessee (owner had moved here, but not registered it yet)

It had no CEL, but the Cat and O2 readiness monitors that were 'not ready'. (TX only allows 1 'not ready' for years 2000+ to pass inspection). I have the Torque Pro app and saw this and told the seller that I couldn't even register it in the state without passing an inspection. He drove it for the next few days but the monitors still didn't set, so he had all 4 O2 sensors replaced (which set them) and then we took it to get inspected together successfully.

After passing inspection, then I took it to the DMV for title transfer and registration.

I'm not sure of Cali's requirements, but TX is pretty tame by comparison, so that's something I'd watch out for. No CEL does NOT by default mean that it will pass inspection. Buying an out of state vehicle has a whole new list of logistical hoops to jump through.

To transfer a title, you need to do it in person by visiting a field office or AAA.
