So after hearing of the design flaw in the factory radiator (see: Pink Milkshake) I thought it was time to look at auxiliary coolers. I was going to order the smaller cooler that everyone seems to put in around here, until I found this note on B&Ms website:
If the radiator in your vehicle does not have provision for a transmission cooler you must use a larger fluid cooler, than you would normally consider, for the vehicle. Typically the smallest cooler you should consider when not using the radiator provision would be the B&M #70266 or #70272 Universal SuperCooler.
Unsure of what the BTU rating of the factory transmission cooler was, I opted to err on the side of caution and go with the big boy. I figured that one day I'll be up in the mountains when its 98 degrees, crawling in 4Lo, 1st gear...and I won't be wishing that I spent a few extra bucks. Unfortunately, it doesn't come with any installation kit. So I picked up some ATF hose and some brass fittings. I had enough flat bar lying around to whip up some brackets. I used some mining-grade abrasion sleeving that I had to run the hoses through the hole with the A/C lines. Toyota couldn't have been nicer to us the way they connected the cooler to the tranny. I was expecting to have to cut the steel lines off beside the motor. Boy was I smiling BIG when I found the hose clamps there! I only had to drill one hole in the core support bracket (under the hood latch) and take the dremel to the dash panel. I painted the gauge body flat black to match the bezel, as you can kind of see the sides of the gauge when its mounted in that ridiculously useless hole. For lighting the gauge, I used the wiring for the ashtray lamp. Just bucked the plug off, crimped to the new bulb base, done. Even works off the dimmer too, bonus.
