So I had a great '97 4runner a few years ago. I keep a second car around to haul kids, random things, take the family out and about on the weekends but mainly to save miles on my commuter ('01 TDI Golf with 256k on it). I also have what some would think as eccentric car tastes. I sold my 4runner, then picked up a Volvo 240 wagon, then picked up a YJ Wrangler, then just picked up and sold an '85 MB 300TD wagon. My wife says I have an automotive bucket list and I have to complete it. I'm starting to feel like I should settle down. Really the Wrangler was awesome but with two little kids I didn't feel like #1 dad hauling them around in a pretty busy area. Safety first. Besides that Wrangler the only car that I'm looking to go back to would be a 4runner. So here I am looking to move into a 4th Gen 4runner (unless some other weird little car pry's the dollars out of my hand).
Anyway. From my research the past week and taking into consideration my budget (less then $13k) Id like to find an '05 or '06 4runner. My wife and I are also considering getting into a light weight camping trailer. The R-pod has caught my eye as a possible travel trailer to hold our family. They are about 2500lb dry. I have considered going V8 but that could be overkill and most likely kill my budget. The reading I've done on V8 exhaust manifolds doesn't make me feel good either. So here I am beginning the hunt.
I have seen an '05 V6 Limited with 174k I thinK I could get for less then 9k. I know that high miles isn't to big of a concern but I have to think resale in 3-5 years. A 200k truck is harder to sell then a 150k truck.
I'll continue to read as many buying guide posts and the pretty comprehensive thread found here. Also seems to be lots of towing threads to keep me busy.
Thanks for reading. Any comments or thoughts on which year/model to focus on would be appreciated. Any comments on what to look for would be helpful too.
