I have back issues ,

2 herniated disks in lower back but MRI shows its not pinching anything ( nerves )

BUT..... during a recent CT scan there was a lot of arthritis in there.

If I'm standing around I hurt after a half our , and back of legs hurt too. I've had 3 shots into my back already , nothing helping.

They are not suggesting surgery at this point but I don't know what to do with this discomfort. I've taken anti-inflamitory drugs with little result's. I have a lot of Vicodin but don't want to take that to much. I do some work that my life and other lives depend on , I cant be out of it or I or someone else might die.

I know Koz is going through some back surgery , so we cant have 2 for 4R guys out of commission at the same time. Who will hold TR4 together.

Anyway anyone have these issues or similar ? just looking for suggestions/ideas.

Also If I would need surgery the wife will drive the 4R if I'm layed up................. WE CANT HAVE THAT !!!!!!

Man that really sucks that your back is messed up. Get plenty of rest and try not to move around too much. I hope you get to feeling better.

Nothing from my end...don't know enough to give you advice. Back surgery may be your only answer if the medical treatment (NSAIDS, steroid injections, physical therapy) is not cutting it.

Good luck.

Falls:

I only have one herniated disk (L5-S1), and have done most NSAIDS, with some physio, but got most success in aquafit. Our pool was closed for renovations for about 8 months, and started to feel discomfort for several weeks recently. Tomorrow, aquafit starts again. With aquafit I have largely been able to avoid the NSAIDs. You might want to consider giving aquafit a try.

About 15 years ago I was stricken with severe back pain. Got up in the middle of the night, fell on the floor in pain, couldn't even get myself off the floor.

Got a couple shots, had an MRI and a CT scan and was finally diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. The pain not only affected my back but my legs as well.

My family doctor started me on anti-inflammatory drugs, but they caused some additional kidney distress, related to pre-exsisting kidney problems. I finally saw a specialist, he ordered some physical therapy and it progressively got better.

Be careful with the anti-inflammatory drugs, they can cause their own set of problems.

I now only have problems at night or if I stand still for long periods of time, and can only take darvocet for pain as I had to have a kidney transplant 13 months ago.

A recent x-ray and CT scan show now progression of the arthritis. Find a good specialist and hope for the best.

Best of luck.

Thanks guys , I appreciate it. Been trying to stay off anti-inflams as much as possible. Don't like taking Vic's either , although enjoyable the too can be habit forming as I know first hand from prev. experience.

I'll try looking into more options suggested. My pain also goes down the back of my thighs.

Falls, sorry to hear about your problems. My dad has many back issues as well. He was diagnosed with spinal stenosis about 3-4 years ago. He has had two major back surguries but neither of them helped. He now lives in constant pain, docs dont think any more sugury will do any good. He does hide it well and some days are better then others, he has all of the usual drugs to take, i couldnt begin to list them all. He had to retire early, but he can still do most activities. I hope your condition isnt as severe and that you feel better soon.

I have/had a herniated disc in my neck. When I injure it or the pain flairs up for whatever reason I take nsaid's for a couple of days for the acute pain. I also tried PT with no help.

After my initial injury I quit weight lifting until it got better well after a year of nagging pain I finally said hell with it, I don't think I could make this any worse so I started weight lifting again and within two weeks the pain was COMPLETELY gone! I couldn't believe it, I was kicking myself for not going back sooner.

And that wasn't a fluke because I had another episode a year or two after the initial and again the only thing that took the pain away was me going back to the gym and strenthening my body, especially my core. This is the ultimate motivation to keep going to the gym. I can't even drive when it flairs up, you would be amazed at how much your neck muscles do just coming to a stop sign when driving.

I'm not saying this is your answer but it may be.
