So couple weeks back I decided it was time to get rid of the VW and get into something that could pull my 2wheeled RV (Kawasaki KLR 650 on trailer). Looked and looked, and ended up with a 92 sr5 v6 auto. 176k on the clock, but 10k on a new warantied motor. body totally straight, black and chrome pckg, leather. anyway, first off I changed all the fluids, engine, tranny, both diffs, and trxfr case. then added rancho 5k series front and changed pads and rotors front due to a braking shimmy. my ?s are:

1. needs new tares, mostly hyway travel, though lotsa snow here in CO. any recomendations, must be very smooth at 80mph, good mpg.

2. I have a vibration that only occurs during decel at moderate or higher speeds, any suggestions on what that could be? when I did the rotors the ?washer nuts? werent torqued, actually not even hand tight, just loose, whats the proper speck on those?,

3. heard very few creaks out of the cv axels, no torn boots, whats best way to preserve them, or do I just change them for peace of minds sake?

At that mileage it could be number of things. Without knowing any of the service history , or pics of components like the mounts, rotors, its somewhat difficult to be exacting. I'll make an attempt. You might consider first checking the trans and engine mounts. They can produce enough shifting in the driveline to produce vibrations, poor handling characteristics, clunks, and wandering on the highway. I would also check the rear lateral rod as well as the rear control arm bushings. I had similar issues with our 90 4runner and it had 70k on it. I found the above mentioned components were completely shot at that mileage. If your getting a shimmy when you brake , then the rotors or front end components could be at issue. The creaks could be from the fact that the chassis is moving around far too much. I found after installing urethane sway bar, lateral rod, and raer control arm bushings, the truck quieted down immediately. So much so in fact, it felt like a different truck. :beer:
