back up lights not working

2000 4-runner with a 5-speed manual transmission. All of the sudden my back up lights stopped working. It looks like there is not a specific fuse for them and all of the fuses have voltage to both sides. There is no voltage at the light buld socket. I pulled what I think is the back-up light sensor off the trany but can not get a voltage reading there. Looks like it can be replaced.

questions...
1) does anybody have any experience with this problem and any suggestions?
2) if I replace the sensor will transmission oil leak out (it is up pretty high on the side)?

This manual page is from a 2000 Tacoma, but the Tacoma and the 4Runner share powertrains.

Make sure you're looking at the right switch on the trans, as there may be several plugs to choose from for various sensors.

And here's what it says about testing the switch and the relay.

If I'm seeing it right the numbering has to be wrong on the picture of the relay. 12V should go across the coil.

fixed - replaced switch on transmission

thanks toto. I pulled the switch and did a continuity check which failed. Got a new one from Toyota, installed it and the lights work.

and the guy at Toyota parts wouldn't let me do a continuity check on the new switch (with my own meter) until I called the manager. They don't want you to "test" an electrical part...
