Back window tailgate button

I like using the black arrow buttons on the outside of my lift gate to roll the back window up and down. The buttons don't work, however, if one of the doors is open.

If one of the passenger doors is open, the truck chirps at me rather than rolling the window up. I understand that the up button is also the lock button, so the chirping is because the truck isn't able to lock when a door is open. Is there anyway to configure the buttons to still roll the back window up even if another door is open?

Hummm I just tried this and your right it doesn't go back up. But I get a solid beep.

Perhaps it's because the door is left open and it cannot lock a door that is not closed. So it gives you a long tone to let you know you have a door open. Same as if you went to hit the lock button on the fob and a door is not closed.

I guess the engineers figured that most of the time if your going to just throw something in the back via the sliding window, chances are all your doors are closed. Plus I'm guessing its an added safety feature in that if you do have a door open, it forces you to secure your vehicle instead of closing the window and walking way with a door left open.

I don't think you can change it.

Maybe also a reminder to check to see that the keys aren't in the truck either. Engineers think of everything, as we know sometimes there is some over-thinking!

I have a Trail, so I don't know for sure. But, I think if you look at the list of customizable functions the dealer can program in the pdf at the beginning of this thread, you will find a few that may help. I would look at the 3rd feature on page1 and the last two features on page 5.

Good point. But if you have a smart key, the truck knows when the key is inside the vehicle or outside. So I guess it would have been cool for them to let the feature work with the door open. But probably because the up button is also the lock button they couldn't do it.

Plus you can have it programed for the back window to go up or down with the fob.

But I rather have my windows go down, so I had them program that instead of just having the back window go up/down.

Just to avoid confusion here, unless Toyota has made changes, your fob can't be programmed to roll the back window up or down. That was a big complaint when the 5th gens came out, and to my knowledge, is still an issue now. You can roll all the windows (and moonroof) DOWN, but not the rear window (with the fob)

And, to the OP: yeah, my limited does that too. It annoys me sometimes. Also, if your truck is RUNNING, those buttons don't function - EITHER. I stopped by to throw some trash out the other day, left my truck running, went to the back. Door was locked. Wouldn't unlock, wouldn't let me use the button, and had to go back to the front to UNLOCK the doors so I could open the hatch to get the trash out. Annoying, but I'm sure some "save you from yourself" feature. (ie.. Truck is running (sat at a stop light) , someone runs up and tries to use your arrows to unlock your truck). It's surely a safety feature.

I was at the dealership last week, getting my programming done, when the tech was trying to enable "roll up" feature, he would get an error message stating that the process could not be completed.

You could go aftermarket, though. The Viper security systems have an extra module that can be set up to open / close specific windows

Correct but it comes at a PREMIUM......those modules installed are a small fortune. How do I know you ask, I use to install them back in the days at Circuit City, and it broke the bank for most people that they didn't get it installed.

they did go down in cost tremendously.

even 4 years ago, the same system would cost nearly 900, and it would support only part of the car, unless wired into a parallels.( doors only, roof only or the back window only).
