Simple example: suppose you forgot someone's birthday. Rather than sending a note of apology, you could backdate the e-mail. They would suspect that the e-mail got delayed rather than knowing you forgot, so they wouldn't be mad at you.

This is a great way to kill someone, then go back and email someone else at that exact time so that you have an alibi.
