Backup Camera Question

Does anyone know if the backup camera included with the 2004 Navigation option can be displayed while the vehicle is in forward motion?

I would like to be able to see what I am trailering while going down the road.

If it can display the rear image while moving forward, does it affect the audio at all, or does whatever was playing before continue to play?

I played with one at the dealership yesterday, but I could not figure it out. I bought a 2004 Limited V8 4x4 w/ Navigation yesterday, but the truck is still in Florida on its way to me in Georgia.

BTW, a lanrge part of my decision to purchase a 4 Runner was based on the information here on this board. Just reading through the posts I realized that everyone seems to love their rigs!

the backup camera cannot be used while the vehicle is in forward motion, it is triggered by the vehicle being put in reverse. also when the camera is activated it doesnt really do that great of a job for veiwing trailing items. there is a aftermarket solution with the pioneer navigation system (which is what i am going to do with my sport)

this pioneer system has a full time trailer cam that can be done split screen with everything else, but this is just a option and if i were in your shoes (being able to get the navi w/ the runner- which i was not able to do with the sport) i would just keep the stock system. and even if you were able to wire the camera to be on all the time it most likely will screw with your audio system...

Thanks for the information. I figured Toyota would not let me view moving video in the dash, even if it is only what is behind me

From other posts, it seems very hard to bypass all the different sensors to "fool" the system.

It would only void the warranty on the electrical system at most.

If done correctly (using wireing harnesses and not splicing anything) the system could be restored to "factory" specs if it needed service.

I am sure that is much easier said than done though....

So, if I could figure out which wire was connected to the reverse sensor (I wonder what it looks for, backup lights turning on or the actual shifter being in reverse?), and fool it into thinking I was in reverse, it should work.

I have seen other posts that mention the unit senses it is moving forward by the GPS sensor, and then overriding the reverse switch anyways. These posts were always in reference to changing the destination while in motion though so I do not know if they apply here.

Does anyone have the wiring diagram for the 2004 factory nav unit? If I knew which wire(s) it was I would give it a shot.

Does anyone know which wire(s) the backup camera comes in on? If I can trick the unit into thinking it is in reverse, then you could in theory also display anything you want, not just the backup camera.....

I would be interested in what you come up with! Please see the thread on the navigation unit for Camry and Solara. There is a guy there that has a website showing the reverse wire. I will also look up the color codes in my manuals and see if they vary at all and let you know.

Thanks. I will need all the help I can get. I used to be very good at car stereo installs, but these days (wife, kids, career, etc...) I just have not had the time!

If this works, I should be able to tap into the camera feed and play any video I want on the nav screen.

My long term plan is to install a video switch (I am looking at the Pioneer unit right now, it has 3 av in and 3 av out) and control what gets displayed.

I would then addd a DVD player to the center console (I am looking at the Panasonic since it has MP3 playback and is shallow enough to fit in the center console without having to cut out the bottom)

At this point I might as well add XM as well....

To get the audio into the system I would use the Blitxsafe AUX adapter. From reading other posts, it seems to work well.

Do these mounting locations seem realistic?
