Backup Camera Wiring

For those that have accessed the wiring leading to the rear tailgate/backup camera, does the wiring run up through the headliner, or through the right interior paneling and then UP into the tailgate?

I want to say that it comes down from headliner, driver's side, through the rubber wire boot leading into the tailgate. Not 100% on that though.

What I feared, is dropping the headliner down a ridiculously difficult process? The main thing is we'd need to grab the bundle of cables, splice into that, and then run cables down and under the vehicle, so that we could relocate the backup camera to my swing arm. Or I just realize I live without a backup camera.

Still not 100% here (breaking my post rules for ya...) BUT-

The wiring should come up from the driver's tail light area, up the rear pillar and into the headliner, then down into the hatch.

If the wires are where I think they should be ^^, I would pop that accordion looking rubber boot off the hatch (it just pulls up from the hatch), find your wires and tap them there. Fish the lines into the headliner. There are some push pins in your headliner that pop out (use a trim tool so you don't damage them). Then pull the weatherstripping away from the top and you can get in there to route your wiring the rest of the way. No need to pull the liner all the way down/out. The weatherstripping has black goop inside that will ruin the headliner so be careful.

I may also be able to identify the wiring from the driver's tailight area, and tap in there, and run it out under the vehicle, that's an option, but your plan makes more sense from a fool proof aspect. If we can route the cables back down the passenger side (taking that panel off between headliner and blue/black side panel is easy), we can pop it out under the vehicle, run it along the swing arm, and wire in another OEM camera.

This is a measure 10 times, cut once situation. Frankly right now the rear camera gets a view of the rear CBI table, so it's super useless.

Let me spend some time looking at the wiring diagrams- they are 2010 but should apply...There are sections that show wiring locations/routing within the body.

I have them in a book so it's easier to follow. Gimme a minute or two...

OK- I remembered correctly!

Y1 is the camera connector.





You can see here the wiring from the camera (red). Connects to the dark yellow harness. That snakes around and across the hatch and connects to the dark orange harness. Orange heads up driver's rear pillar and through that rubber boot into the headliner and connects to the purple harness. Purple harness goes down driver's tail light area then through sill plates all the way up front.

Obviously the "real" harnesses aren't colored, lol.

That should get you going...

Note it's Y2 on the 2015+, I was looking it up on AllData. The schematic looks very similar however for 2015+ however. I concur with your observations.



I will second the "be careful with the headliner" comment Antman made. If you bend them too much, they crease, and they will hold grease and glue type stuff like a mother grizzly protecting her young. Very, very easy to screw headliners up.

I'm also heavily debating if this is worth the effort, because I risk breaking more than I gain to fix.

Not really- see if you can access the wires by the tail light. Nothing to do but unwrap the electrical tape. If you want to get under the truck from there, the rubber grommet is right in that space...

Good call, I may investigate a bit more next weekend. If I can find the wires in question, towards the driver tail-lights, then it's an easy project from there, just make a really long run of cable, poke it out under the vehicle, feed it long the swing arm, attach camera.

I rerouted my factory backup camera from the stock location to just above my hitch receiver. You don't need to touch the headliner to access everything, it's all behind the tailgate plastic, then behind the layer of film (which is applied to the truck using Venom's spit, I swear, that stuff is gnarly, but not that bad overall). I'm not going to lie, it took my a couple trips to the shifter, moving it into reverse, to make sure I had the correct harness.

If I can do it, you can for sure!

I've got a thought of getting a camera installed in in the rear vent visor. Might take a bit of paint and body but don't know why it couldn't work. Would give you birds eye view.

Yes be very careful. .Hopefully splicing into the pillar harness is the easy answer I have dropped the headliner on my FJ twice and doing it right is time consuming even just to drop the rear a few inches.
Recently My glass installer i use at work bent the shit out of a customers headliner and got sealant all over it while taking care of a warranty rear glass leak for me. My customer was not happy and i had to eat $1300 to replace it.

If I can access it in the left side pillar that's easy enough. The only rub is that I'd install it in two places, either below my hi-lift jack which is about 1-1.5' lower than it originally was, OR I could install it on the bottom of my jerry can carrier, which might protect it better and also get it CLOSER to the original location.
