Backup Camera

Has anyone ever installed an aftermarket backup camera? I have an aftermarket Kenwood KVT715 7 inch dvd player, and I am considering purchasing a camera to help with towing the boat and to help with backing up in general in the dark. I have researched and feel comfortable that I can handle the wiring. I am mainly concerned with the location. I am not sure that I want to drill a 1.5inch hole into any part of my baby. I was thinking that I can either put it in the top spoiler for a more overhead view, behind the license plate for a straight line of sight, or the hitch reciever for a lower view. Any suggestions? i am going to get the one that goes on the tag. and then follow the factory harness to inside of the car.

Or make up a bracket and mount it above the rear window and use some double sided tape maybe.

I believe that the harness is only on the SR5 model. I have a Sport so I guess I am going to have to run the wires myself. I have searched pretty thouroughly myself, and have not really found any advice on the install. If you know of anywhere I can get some basic diagrams or tutorials, please let me know. Thanks

the ones i have seen use basic RCA jacks. so just have to get an extension for it.

I know that I can wire the camera as far as the video is concerned. I am mostly trying to figure out how to take the plastic cover off of the inside of the tailgate so that I have full access to the actually body of the tailgate. This way I would be able to run the wires properly.

You really don't have get extensions for the camera. Cameras consist of 3, technically 4, wires... power, ground, video.... some now have a microphone built in so they have an audio cable as well. All you really have to do to extend the video is get 2 wires, cut the video wire about 3-4 inches back from one end of the plug, and use the sheilding around the wire as a typical wire and the wire inside as the other wire. Sure some quality is lost but not much, and its a backup camera so who cares. I can take a picture of what i'm talking about if need be.

Yea I think I am gonna be doing this cutting technique anyway. I need to run the wires through a very small hole, so I think that no matter what, I have to cut the actual RCA jack off of the wire. I am not sure if you actually lose any quality or not, as long as you properly reattach an RCA jack at the end after running the wires. Do you have a schematic or any other useful info on these cameras? I am mostly curious as to how people run the power from the Backup White Light cables. Do you have to use a 12v relay? Also, are these cameras switched on with a ground or positive preference, or does it not matter? Here is the one I got...

I, too am considering purchasing the license plate camera but I want to mount it more like the factory cam. I believe the factory nav backup camera is mounted underneath the door handle grab area. Perhaps one of the limited edition owners with the navi backup camera will take a picture for us. I am thinking of using a bracket that will be mounted to this area with screws. I don't want to use it on the license plate as it will cover up my favorite NFL team logo.

hey Sub, did you ever move the camera from its original mounting position? My friend wants one now and he has the same exact model as mine but wants to do the stock install location. So now i need to find him a smaller camera than mine. Just wondering if you ever had a chance to modify yours? Take it easy...

Check out the Eclipse 105. I fit it in the stock location very nicely.

i really like the size of this unit but its made for eclipse units and has an eclipse plug for the video and power (dont really want to cut into it). I need one that is universal or compatible with the avic-z1 (pioneer). Spider, can you take a pic of your install, and do you have an eclipse head unit?

Yes I have an Eclipse AVN 5435 HU. I'll try to take some pictures this weekend of the install. I would think the tap in would be easy because, as you can see on your picture, the white plug has the wires already exposed so you just need to add a compatable connection for your application like you would with any other camera unless its a Pioneer.

After trying both the bumper, and the Lift Gate on the tailgate, I decided that the best place to mount my camera was in the spoiler. This is because in order to properly take advantage of the whole "backing up and not hitting anything" idea, you have to have an angle on the bumper. This means that you need to be looking down on the bumper, because if the camera is simply pointing straight back at the car behind you, you will not be able to tell how close you are to the bumper. Here was my final setup, with pics. Let me know what you think:beer:
