backup cameras

I bought a backup camera for my son and Wife this Christmas.

I just finished installing it in my sons' 2006 Eclipse and what a pain it was. I fished it through the headliner (with power as well) and around a multitude of body panels. The camera I used has a dashcam built in and the screen clips to the rear view mirror. The only pain is, it has a power cord which plugs into the acc car outlet. With my sons' car, I mounted an outlet in the trunk and fished the power cable through the headliner, as I said, and it plugs in, in the trunk.

I'm thinking of buying another one for the 4Runner. Has anyone installed one in their 4Runner? Where is the best location? The plate location is the usual spot, however, as our plates are mounted on the lift-gate, the idea of disassembling the lift-gate and shoehorning the camera cable through the cable "bellows" at the top of the lift-gate doesn't really excite me much. Suggestions/ideas would be appreciated.

I haven't had experience with the "wireless" transmitters, but I do know they'd be an option.

I did mine the old fashioned way through the upper lift gate rubber tubing. Using the Dawn dish soap trick REALLY helps slide things through. It doesn't take long at all. Wired all the way to my head unit. Again, running cable is never a fun thing. However, doing it right the first time will save you the headache of coming back to the project later. ....Especially if the wireless route doesn't work.

I've used one of the wireless transmitter ones on my work van, picks up other channels sometimes but works well.
You could mount somewhere near your hitch(above if space allows) and then get to your reverse lead on your trailer harness if you have one. The hatch to cabin pass thru was a pain on my 2010 aswell

i have a 4th gen but im sure you could do the same. i did not want to do the license plate for reasons you mentioned. i also did not want to drill holes or cut in to my bumper. instead i removed one of the bumper bolts and mounted the camera mount to the bumper this way. its not dead center and kind of low but it works perfect for what i use it for.

I mounted mine to the hitch, I wanted to use the camera/ plate light replacement as it looked factory, but it also looked like a pain to get the wires thru the lift gate with out a lot of work. I ran the wiring along the trailer wiring and then thru the vent that is located under the right side of the bumper. I still might go back and install the license plate light/ camera.

I've got Yada wireless cams on all my vehicles and they work great.
Their wide angle lens is impressive.

I have the same backup camera you have posted there. I already ran the wiring from my headunit all the way to the back of my 4runner. I ran the wire underneath all the plastics and took my time to make it clean. I have been lazy and delaying the last part of the install which requires opening up the lift gate plastics and fishing the wire through.

It looks like everyone approves of their wireless solutions. Can some of you guys post a link to the exact one you would recommend for those who don't want to run wires front to back of the vehicle?
