Hi hakabo'

Not quite sure what it is you would like to improve on you truck... could you elaborate a little more on your objective(s) e.g., better off-road capability, height increase, better handling at higher speeds on the highway, smoother ride, etc...

maybe im way off base here, but with the rear suspension design, if you are getting axle wrap, you must have some worn parts. link bushings and such.

As I understood it, The "axle wrap" (thunk) is related to a defective driveshaft (propeller shaft) issue (TSB) on 2010 thru '12 SR5 and trail models; don't remember hearing anything about suspension system parts or 4th gen 4Runners being included... Must have missed that :noidea:

Yeah I don't think its possible to have axle wrap on a 4 link coil sprung suspension. That's more of a leaf spring issue. If your driveshaft is clunking I would advise greasing the zerks and going from there.

Anyaxle wrap in a 4 link suspension is caused by worn upper or lower control arm bushings. If you are thinking the clunk when you stop is axle wrap it is not. You should do what was already said. Put a grease gun an the drive shaft expansion yoke grease fitting and pump it until some grease seeps out, Then hit all the U joints too.

Any axle has some amount of wrap, unless you have it bolted directly to the frame. I agree that wrap is normally a leaf spring problem and a stock 4link does a very very good job of mimizing that wrap, but there's still a tiny amount of inherent wrap that is intended to be absorbed by the bushings and such.

If the OP really does have axle wrap, it's going to be bad bushings or control arms. Hakabo, can you describe exactly what the problem you're chasing is?

Most everything I've heard here is basically accurate information. However, I do think we're discussing two completely different conditions and using the term "Axle wrap" interchangeably. This is Toyota's definition of an axle wrap problem: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-g...s-fix-axle-wrap-driveshaft-clunky-thumpy.html... Technically a "powertrain" issue. The other problem of shifting (clunking) control arms or stabilizer bar, falls under the heading of a "suspension system" (bushing) issue... just for clarification! Regards!

"Thank you" for your "insight".

Axle wrap is only one thing, and that is when the axle twists under torque from the driveshaft. It is generally a symptom of worn suspension bushings or bad suspension design, and is most common with an axle that has very flexy leaf springs and/or has been lifted with blocks. The driveshaft clunk problem you linked is not axle wrap, and neither is clunking/shifting control arms (although they can cause axle wrap if they're bad enough). When the OP comes back and describes what his problem actually is, we can let him know if it's axle wrap or something else. Trying to assign multiple definitions to axle wrap does not help, and in fact confuses the issue, which is what causes weird threads like this in the first place.

thanks for the responses. my symptoms are as follows: occasionally when i come to a stop there is a "thunk". it is an 08 with close to 100,000 miles so there could be some worn parts. i have not crawled under it yet - just bought it earlier about a week ago. When i had my tacoma redoing all the u joints in the drive shaft made a significant improvement, however i had also put new shocks all the way around and an AAL.

It sounds like i should start with greasing the drive shaft. Can someone explain what the bushings mentioned are?

The bushings people above mentioned are on the end of the upper and lower axle links. They are the 4 rods that connect the axle to the frame. what they are saying is that if the bushings are worn that bad you could be experiencing axle wrap. However what you've described sounds like greasing the old drive shaft should do the trick.
