Bad bad BAD shaking... Then it goes away.

I need to check my steering rack bushings, although I think My shimmy is from the tires. Multiple reviews on tire rack lead me to believe this. If you are gonna order some new bushings, let me know. Might as well do those as well as the rear hatch struts......

If its the rotors

your getting a pulsation. You could have thrown a wheel weight or busted a tire bead.

Might be a stuck caliper? but I doubt it.

If you go slow enough say less then 10mph, does the steering wheel shimmy side to side with each rotation of the
tire? If so then you shifted or broke a belt in the tire itself.

On the first hard corner you took, you could have even broke or lodged a ball in the outer CV joint, making that joint bind up after it straightened out because you said it went away after you took the other hard corner going the other way, dislodging the ball??
How old are the CV axles?

update update update

Alright so it happened again today, this time I was just cruising down HWY 410.

There was nowhere for me to turn off, so I had to drive with the shakes for about a mile, before stopping at a stoplight. As before, the shaking was the worst when stopping.

After pulling away from the stoplight, the shake was gone. I never turned or anything, just came to a complete stop (like I did prior to my left turn that I thought fixed it) and it cured the shake.

Pulled into a parking lot immediately and checked the calipers. They were not hot, I wouldn't even call them warm. I was able to place my finger on them.

This is probably a long shot but a family members Passat was doing the same thing. Just randomly start shaking at highway speeds. 1 week later it shat a CV. I swapped in 2 new axles from Napa and its been fine for the past month.

I know its not even close to the same vehicle but it could be something to check.

I can't just start throwing money into right now... Just bought my 7th Injector Kit... Any idea how I could test my CV?

yeah, especially if they arent completely shot... they may be seated fine for a bit, and then at high speed start rotating a bit off and that could shake the heck out of the front of your car..

try getting under there and pulling and pushing on your axles see if there is any front/back/up/down play in it...

I know when it snows sometimes snow and ice will stick to the axles and make them spin heavy on oneside and it vibrates the car, once the ice comes off, its fine again. Not saying its ice, just giving you an idea that something attached to the axle can make it spin heavy on one side. think of when you put that huge rug in the washer machine and it gets wet and goes thunk, kathunk, thunk,

Here is my guess after reading through the thread, your rear brakes might need new drums. Once they get to a certain thickness they will actually warp under heat, thus causing the vehicle to shudder.
Best way to check is to get going about 50mph and then pull on your parking brake. If you feel the handle shake, your rear drums need replacing.
Try that one...

After showing some mechanically inclined friends a video of my steerig rack, I have ordered the poly bushings from Wheelers. Next step is going to be the rack guides, tie rods and LBJs. One at a time, so I know what was broke, and what is just preventative.

Today I ordered the poly bushings and the steering rack guide parts. If that doesn't work I will replace the LBJs (going to do this anyway) and the Tie rods if needed. Going to go test them now.

Replaced my steering rack guide today.

Easy task, made an improvement on my steering response, but did not fix the shakes.

Bushings come in tomorrow. I have high hopes for them...

The drivers side, where it goes up to the steering wheel, moves even more. Noticed as I was turning the camera off.

I have had the bushings sitting for about a month now. Need to get it done. But the weather is crap. I don't know how you control that thing on the freeway. Mine is scary. That one is SCARY.
