Bad Catalytic disables my Traction Control!?

So after reading your messages I can see you did some homework on my previous issues. I appreciate you doing that. Unfortunately you do not know the whole story and the timing of it. The main topic here is that a bad o2 shouldnt take out stability control.

I am also familiar with the fact that my 04 is now 10 years old and 150K+ miles. I've also owned 3 other vehicles with more miles that did not cost near as much. That was part of my complaining. Two of those vehicles were American made even! So yeah maybe I got a lemon....

I apologize for sounding like a fool to you G. In the future if you think I look like a fool for using my right to complain on a public FORUM then.....:rockthrow:

I looked at your previous posts, most of your posts are complaints. I wanted to see where you are coming from with your comments. Where you say you have a warranty. Where you want to trade in the truck because of issues.

Is it a bad design for tracs to be taken off when a cel comes on? I agree. You should sell it, trade in, whatever. .. You shouldn't suffer like that, you deserve to be happy. I know Honda crvs don't do this. You would be happier in one of those or Honda pilot.

I love my 4 runner with its flaws. The good far out weighs the bad.

If I complained about a vehicle this much, I would do something about it.

Honda CRV huh? Personal experience? I'll pass but you might be on to something. I should sell it. Wanna buy it?

Almost forgot to fill my quota of complaints for ya.

Darn Maintenance light started blinking this morning when I started it. I'd better sell it fast!!

you should sell it. i wouldnt buy it from you since its such a huge turd.

You are a fool.

Awww are you sure?

You would be "foolish" not to!

From your previous posts it sounds like you spent more money on yours than I have on mine. So I would deduct that you have a bigger turd!

As you can read from my previous posts, I can afford to, I can turn my own wrenches, and I never complained about it. I asked for help, searched what is needed to fix my truck. Then I CONTRIBUTED back to the community with my how to repairs and mods.

To you it might seem like a turd. Your opinion doesn't amount to much. I do not spare an expense when I do repairs. I fix it right the first time and I am done with it.

The fool is the one that buys a extended warranty and still has to pay out of pocket for a repair. I lol about that one.

My 03 is @ 176, 000 miles. It will bring me many more trouble free miles. I do not drive around for months with a CEL on, then jump on a public forum and complain about it. Like it's your right to do so.

Well thanks for your contributions! You deserve a gold star. So you had to spend all that money after turning your own wrenches? You are more of a fool than I thought!

Btw the warranty turned out to be free. Lol about that one.

America!

Really, free? You paid for it ways you didnt realize. Just like what you are doing now. Complaining about stuff that was neglected by previous owner. Now you have to fix on your own dime.

Truth finally comes out, you got a free warranty and you expect them to payout on your claim.

Yes, i do deserve a gold star, matter of fact a few of them, but i dont expect it nor do i ask for it.

You carry on ranting and raving about warranty and how your truck cost too much to maintain ect. Its the nature of buying a 10 year old 155+ mile used vehicle. What did you expect it to be flawless and run forever? Lets be realistic here. Your expectations far exceeds reality.

You say i am the fool for fixing my vehicle to new or better than new standards, Yes i might be. You may have a point there. Thing is I love my truck, i treat it with the best parts it needs, and in return i expect it to last for as long as the factory parts did.

Assumption is the mother of all &uck ups. You make that statement oh so true! Yes I ended up with a free warranty. And yes I expected them to pay for my claims. You really got me there because the truth is out! Go ahead and keep harping on the same thing over and over. Here it is: I bought a used vehicle specifically a toyota 4 runner after the good luck we had with our 3rd gen and the reputation that follows them. In the first year of ownership I have had a lot of things go wrong with it (it happens when buying a used vehicle sometimes and I understand that). Some of these things were covered under warranty some were not. Either way you are right I complained on this forum about it. Is it a crime? No. Is it my right. Hell yeah I can continue to do it all day end day. I guess I am a fool because I dont change my own brake boosters and cat converters. Dad always told me to work smarter not harder. Our 3rd Gen had 253,000 miles when it was totalled. My wife drove it 75% of the time and she isnt easy on vehicles. I was hoping the 4th gen would live up to that bomb-proof rep. It has not done that "yet" and some of the things were design/enginerd flaws like the brakebooster. It did not matter how hard it was driven by a previous owner it was a poor design. So why havent I traded it in? Because like you I do love her. If you look at some of my posts over the past year you would read that. You know nothing about me so I am asking you to stop repeating the same thing over and over about how treat your truck better and deserve praise for it. Remember that assumption comment at the beginning of the paragraph? You ultimately are the one who looks like a fool.

The brake booster unit isn't designed poorly I would say, its just a complicated unit that does a myriad of functions; even the failures are not that common (keep in mind forums will seem to have "higher failure rates" due to their nature). Its going to be a fairly standard function on newer model vehicles due to lower manifold vacuum present in GDI systems and hybrid systems that are going to be popping up as CAFE standards become an issue for manufacturers, even the base model Yaris has a complicated ABS solenoid pack that will cost you thousands when it kicks out.

Understood. My point is that this system must not have scored that great as my friends Taco is a 2006 and his brothers is a 2007 and they do not have the complicated system that mine has yet they have the exact same motor. I remember when we had this discussion about how even toyota will not repair parts in this unit but instead recommend an entire new unit. In my opinion that is silly. Especially if it is just the accumulator or accumulator pump or something like an o-ring that has failed. I believe the price of that unit new is 1,700 dollars plus somewhere around 600 or so to install it. I was willing to attempt the install but then I was told that you have to have the sst tool to bleed all the solenoids in the unit correctly. I am going to be looking at new or close to new vehicles so that I can have warranty coverage for these new systems that can not be worked on.

The reason it wasn't included in the Tacoma (it is built into the Land Cruisers, Tundras, 4Runners, FJ Cruisers, GX470/460, ect) is probably the same reason the 2014 Tacoma uses the older 1GR-FE engine with Single VVTi, the the Tundra, 4Runner, and FJ Cruiser all benefit from the Dual VVTi motors. Not to mention that while the Tacoma is a 120/150 Platform vehicle it is not fully boxed like the 4Runner, GX470/460, FJ Cruiser, and Land Cruiser Prado.

You technically need a Scantool to bleed the vehicle in general because of the ABS system, this is not new; its been around since ABS was introduced. Most people just get by without having to bleed the solenoid pack because more than half the time air doesn't make it into the units.

As for serviceability, that's nothing new either. I don't see Cadillac, Toyota, Lexus, or any one else that offered this type of system (which is basically n all hybrids, higher end luxury cars and/or a variation using a vacuum pump for GDI engines) offering anything but the whole unit. Its just easier for the manufacturer to sell and train technicians to replace an entire unit that to bother training them to diagnose, disassemble, repair, and rebuild units.

Welcome to the new age of electronic wizardary that is built into even the cheapest of vehicles. Its only going downhill now that manufacturers want to traditional physical braking connections, create self-driving/self-parking cars, catering to every little new technology to gain the upper end over their competitors.

People are only now starting to realize what they've got themselves into because all this technology has been around for about a decade, but now its starting to age and break down and their Manufacturer warranty won't cover the repairs. What's worse is most technicians have refused to learn about newer technology because they are intimidated, afraid, or do not want to spend the time/money to invest in repairs for such technologies. But they have little to no choice, this isn't the days of carburetors and single injector throttle body systems. You need to understand Computer Networking, Programming (to a mild extent), how to use Digital Oscilloscopes, complex interactions of sensors/outputs/modules, ect.

The truth is ANY vehicle you buy in the last ten years has expensive electronic components that will cost you an arm and a leg to repair when they do go bad.

well said. no complaints here. although some may feel they have a right to complain and will exercise that right.

Oh people can complain all they want, I know I do sometimes. I just think people tend to blame it on the wrong things is all.

For example, using the ABS system to create modes like Traction Control, Vehicle Stability, and even the ATRAC mode for our 4Runner is progressive technology and reducing cost in vehicle manufacturer by using existing technology vs. hardware like locking axles, locking differentials, ect for vehicles that won't see hardcore off-roading in the majority of their sales.

Where as Windows 8 & 8.1 Metro UI is one of the worst design exercises for an OS not exclusive to touch screen tablets and phones I have ever had the displeasure to experience.

X2 Well said. Thanks for making a little more sense of the matter Blackworks.

"Some" of us would say that all this new techonology just sucks. I wouldnt blame them for exercising their right to do so.

I don't mean to sound like a Dick, but substituting good driving skills with traction control is putting your family at greater risk than the system not working. If your burning up cats every two years, I would say there is a problem somewhere else in the system. I would replace things like the injectors and the fuel filters, along with the cats.

I hear what you are saying birdman. I dont substitute good driving with traction control. A while back it did save me from a possible accident though in Steamboat Springs after a day on the slopes. I now live in the mountains of Colorado and I drive over passes in excess of 10,000 ft every couple weeks during winter so I have learned a lot over the past few years. In town we havent seen the pavement for a few weeks as they are just ice and snow packed.

There are merits to both traditional driving skills and assistance, but to be honest with you I still believe new drivers should be taught in a manual transmission vehicle with little to no safety assistance to LEARN how to drive a vehicle in the event of system failures and hope to never use them instead of panicking when they do need it.

Its the same thing I see at the range when someone new or "experienced" to weapons jams his or her gun and they get this panicked deer in the head lights look because they have no idea what to do.

Sorry to be so negative but this 4th gen has just cost me a lot of money this year and I am not very impressed with it as of late. Seems like I can go about two months and some other major repair comes up. The wife wrecking the 3rd gen hasn't helped at all.

LOL! I have my year end total for the truck... $7,452.83 Including a new transmission and a whole lot of other things. I've put over $15,000 into the truck I spent $21,000 on, but I'm madly in love with it! Also I kinda cause all the issues... But that is beside the point.

You should have no issues, but some trucks do. That is just how life works my man.

As for the traction issue, check out my very first thread that was linked a few posts before me. I HATE traction systems. Mine is off 75% of the time. I feel greater throttle response and (shocker) I know how to drive! I don't need the truck stepping in because a tire on an open diff spins for half a second on a patch of sand. I've had the stupid traction control totally lock up for the stupidest things and it irks me. I have also experienced my ABS kicking in when hitting a bump going down hill and applying the brake. There is no need for that to happen! If someone is in front of me, I end up getting way too close for comfort because my foot is on the floor but the brake controller is too busy clicking like a typewriter instead of stopping me! All because of a manhole cover...

My cats are shot, my O2 sensor is bad, and I have a cracked manifold. When the PO420 pops up, it shuts off your traction and everything else. Its annoying but I have an ultragauge so I just reset the code on the fly and I'm good to go. My truck is quirky, but so am I, so I don't mind. She has been reliable except for the extra wear and tear that I have put her through. I wouldn't want any other vehicle :) I will drive a Toyota truck until the day I take out a Dunkin Donuts accidentally....:spy:
