Bad rear axle bearing?

Can anyone tell me how to determine if the bearing on this 99 4runner rear axle shaft is bad? It has 158k miles and the axle seal pooped out. I do not feel any up and down play in the shaft when it's bolted to the axle but I can rock the backing plate just a hair when it's off the axle like in the photo. It spins freely without any noises or grinding.









Video is not working well but hopefully it does soon.

I have used the bearing inspection procedure in the FSM for 20yrs or so, has never steered me wrong.

Bad bearing?

Rocking is normal. How many miles? If the bearing has been rolling around with the gear oil then it probably washed out the grease and will prematurely fail if it's not bad at this time. If it were me, I would replace them on both sides.

I am expecting it to fail in the near future cuz of the gear oil in the bearing and I have all the parts coming from Amayama for when it does. I was just hoping it can hold out with a new seal for a couple months till my funds recover. I just spent $2k on my jeep.

You can probably hold out. The only way it would be a problem is if the bearing is actually bad and immediately compromises the seal.

Ok good. I'm gonna put it back together with a new seal and hold my breath.

I would clean off any gear oil that might have gotten on your drums or shoes.
