Bad_Vision's 1985 Toyota 4RUNNER TDI Swap (Completed swap)

I know Steve Schaffer of sonoransteel.com used a dana 44 up front with those exact ratios. It worked for him. I think it's on yotatech.

I did the math and over 1% is to much difference for me. I have run gear sets before like that and it was a costly mistake.

Bad_Vision's TDI 1984 build with 1996 SAS build.

Here we go boys and girls it has begun.
Out with the old.

The frame is off the 1996 and I'm about to tear down the 1984. Check out the interior

SR5 interior with the cool gray slash pattern!
I'm currently waiting for it to thaw out before I rip the body off and throw the frame under the 96 body.

She thawed enough to get some body pictures.

Normally I would not junk a 84 body. But in this case there is no saving it as the floors are totally gone and it's just to much work and money to save this gem.

What if you can find some FZJ 80, 95'- 97' axles? That way you get disk breaks all the way around and stay toyota? 9.5 full floater rear axle, 8.5 high Pinion front? That's what I would use anyway!

No advantage to disc over drum it's not a race car.
High pinion would be nice but I have lots of solid axle first gen stuff so I'm using that.

Can you post some pictures of the frame parts on the newer one that caused it to be fatal? Would be beneficial to the future searchers to see where to look when doing a PPI. Thanks.

Separated body and frame from the 1984

The frame is in good shape minus some scaling that will come off when it's sand blasted.

Just to show what to look for when assessing your frame.

If you have scaling tap it with a hammer hard. If you punch through you have problems but if it's still tough and hurting your hand your good.

You ever get your axles figured out? Since you have a ton of 1st gen stuff, why not just build them up? Straight axles from '84 would be best, as they have the support brackets welded in from the factory, and I would not worry about snapping axles at all if you run Longfield's Superaxles. You will not break them, and if you somehow did, Bobby has a lifetime warranty on them, free replacement if you do! Chances are, you'll break the diff or transfer case before you ever hurt those axles.

And that's some nasty scaling on that frame! I gotta see how it looks once you sandblast it. Hopefully it doesn't blow through when you clean it up.

Yup I'm running the Toyota mini truck axles I'm using the Marlin crawler conversion plate to put a top shift gear drive t case mounting to the A340 that is on the 3.4l set up so it will make it drivers drop and gear driven.

Unfortunately Bobby Long is not around anymore and Trail Gear bought the Longfield brand. Longfield axles are now basically "rebranded" dirty 30's. Go with RCV, they are the same as the original Longfield birfs.

Really? WTF!?!?!?! :suspicious:

So, I guess the lifetime warranty meant lifetime of Bobby's company?

I guess I shouldn't worry too much, even with a stock 1UZ, I doubt there will be enough torque to snap it.

Hell guys with Cummings swaps will run the dirty thirtys until they switch to tons or unimog axles. Of course most intelligent off-roading guys know you don't need 44" tires to do anything anymore. 36" and 37" are more common now.
