my 4runner still has the badges, but dental floss, and i hear a screw driver for the front, but i've never actually looked at it.

A lot of people have taken their emblems off. It's a fairly simple process.
I used my sister's blow dryer to heat up the adhesive backing on the emblems. After blasting the emblems for a minute or so, I wedged a plastic putty knife under it and started to pry the emblem off of the car. It helped to keep constant heat on the emblem while prying it off so having another person to assist is a plus. I tried the dental floss method first but found that to be ineffective because the floss would keep breaking. Some people have recommended string, but I found the plastic putty knife I bought from Lowes to do the trick.
Once the emblems are off, there will be some residue left over from the adhesive. It depends, but I know for mine there was a significant amount of dried-up adhesive left behind. I had no luck using GooGone or trying to pick at it with my fignernail because there was just too much adhesive. Thanks to a recommendation I got from someone on here I used lighter fluid and that worked perfectly. Use a shop rag or an old t-shirt and douse it with the lighter fluid. Then hold the wet rag against the adhesive and let it sink in. I did this for about 30 seconds to a minute then applied some more lighter fluid and rubbed it into the dried adhesive. After that, I was able to pick off the now loosened up adhesive with my fingernail and remove any remaining traces with GooGone once I got the bulk of the crap scraped off.

I used zippo lighter fluid and it worked great. And make sure you get a plastic putty knife so you don't scratch the paint.
