Baja Rack vs. Gobi Stealth Rack

That's just like your opinion, man. The BajaRack is good quality. I walk around up on my BR all day long without worrying. I have the Gobi ladder, and yes, it works as a ladder without issue. I climb on it all the time and it doesn't budge.
yes that is why I said PERSONALLY... it is my opinion.... no doubt the quality of the baja is good or so many people wouldnt be buying them... I PERSONALLY like the Gobi better.... thanks for the feedback on the gobi ladder...

Baja is making an insert now. I will post pics when I receive mine :)

Great news! I actually met John Gjata from Bajarack and had a few drinks with him sitting around the camp fire at the Toyota Jamboree .

Great guy and one of things brought up was the rack insert and glad to see they followed thru so fast. Hard to get better customer service then Bajarack and they said they were swamped with business!

John is a rockstar, and Baja has the best service hands down. My insert should be here around the 5th so in my regular photo whore style I will take 500 pics LOL

for those planning or considering ordering a gobi.

it has been 42 days since i placed my order. when i originally placed my order it was supposed to take 2 weeks to build and 1 to ship (21 days).

during this time Mark has done his best to give updates but they were still few and far in between as not even Mark could get a hold of Gobi.

I contacted Baja before ordering my gobi. I got a response from John always within 48 hours at the latest and I contacted baja canada who contacted me back within 72 and appologized for contacting so late as they were busy in the shop.

I emailed Gobi and never got a reply back, hence why I decided to order through Mark.

I think if I could do things all over again I would order the Baja. While the gobi design and ladder combo is what i really want, the customer service is just piss poor.

those of you who are dedicated to ordering the gobi, be ready for a long wait time with no updates.

edit:

baja canada did not have the rack i wanted in stock but said that they could have it made and shipped to my house directly (which gobi could not do without quoting me a ridiculous price) in a time span of 2 weeks. since the shipping cost was so high i decided to ship the gobi across the border where i'll have to go pick it up and bring it back across to my house to install.

This is the reason I did not order my rack from Gobi. It was almost as if they did not want my business. I ordered my rack while Baja was closed for Christmas (I believe they are closed all of December, or a couple weeks) yet I got an email from John within a couple days. From the time Baja opened their doors again after the new year until my rack was on my truck was around 5 days.

Baja > Gobi when it comes to customer service hands down. I do not care how awesome your parts are, if you lack simple communication, you will not get my business.

Now, when I got my ladder through TrailDuty, totally different. I got a bad mount and contacted TrailDuty directly and had an email from Gobi within a day. Did not hear from them again for nearly a month after attempting communication directly through them. Another email to TrailDuty to see where the hell the replacement mount was and it arrived two days later.

It seems to me that with the bigger vendors of their parts they have no issue responding, but the little guy giving them their hard earned money cannot even get a response.

I wish I would have known when I pulled the trigger on the GOBI.

Seemed RiDE here on the board had good communication and he is local to me, price was good, and I liked the GOBI stealth for my needs.

I did not pay too much attention to the customer service of GOBI directly, since I went through RiDE.

Now it has been over a month with no word on expected production / shipping / delivery, nothing.

I want to make sure my post does not come off as negative towards RiDE, that is not my goal or feeling at all. Mark was very helpful through the ordering process and very responsive.

I just wish the lead time would have been more realistic when I purchased, it may have changed the rack company I went with.

Mark is not the problem for sure.

IMO, and what I would do is this. Dispute with CC company, and order the Baja. You will have the Baja on before Gobi realizes that you disputed it :roadkill:

payment was made to mark via paypal so disputing it would hurt him not gobi.

i have also been considering asking for a refund from mark/ride and ordering a baja, but as that wouldnt really do much to gobi and only hurt mark's business i've been holding off on that option.

DAng....

Just dang. I was set on going Gobi all the way. But after reading all of this I am now leaning the other way. I will still get the ladder though. It was mentioned that it could hold 200#. Can it hold a 250# guy and whatever it is he's tossing up there?

Thanks for keeping this thread civil. Too many times have I seen threads like this combust. Makes me proud to be a member here.

i'd imagine any sort of warranty work will be non-existent since communication is completely lacking.

If I nuke this rack somehow i'll get a local shop to fix it.

edit:

for the record i placed my order on the 16th of april, still havent gotten mine yet. i was told 2 weeks build time 1 week ship.

all the weekends and days that i had originally planned to take off for holidays and such in june are looking grim. if i dont have the rack to put the fuel jerry cans on top the trips wont happen and thus my holiday plans go out the window.

I agree completely, and I will add this:

Offroad, overland, and camping as passtimes and hobbies are bigger than you and your truck, and bigger than the retailers or manufacturers themselves. I look for companies that actively support, contribute, and participate themselves in those activities in an open and notorious way.
Go to almost any offroad or overland event, and Baja Rack will be there with their Fjs supporting the gathering of like-interested people and kicking back talking to people. Is it great for marketing? Sure, but they are out there willing to talk to people about their products, answering questions and having fun with us the consumer.

Secondly, their website is clean and easy to use and like Brock said, they are responsive. A company like that earns my business for a long time.

save yourself the headache and go with the baja,

in hindsight i wish i had done this from the get go. we'll see how this all plays out but its ridiculous so far.

Hmmm. Sounds very similar to my experience with the Gobi group buy over a year ago. I remember being frustrated as well.

Now that it's over- love my Gobi!

My fat butt weighs over 200#, and I've climbed up there after a HUGE dinner, so figure close to 250#. :hungry:

HA!- Don't worry about the ladder, you could probably pull the hatch OFF with it if you tried. It's strong.

I got a call this morning from Sandra at Gobi Racks,

She explained why they were delayed, gave me the shipping confirmation I was looking for and apologized for the delay.

I am happy now as that was all I was looking for.

My rack is on route and hopefully I'll have it next week.

Gobi has just reclaimed some points in my books for customer service.

Thanks Mark for handling the situation, I appreciate it.

Anyone ordering a Gobi should order through Mark (RiDE) as the customer service that HE provides makes up for what Gobi was lacking.
