Bandit Runner's Build Thread

How? I just talked to them 2 months ago and they couldn't even give me a date on when the 3rd Gen rears would be ready. Do you have a test set or a production set? What's the compressed and extended numbers? You gotta be stoked with them.

I "settled" for Kings. I'm still stoked but I might have held out a bit had I known ADS was close. lol

I was working with [MENTION=102266]SRQ-Runner[/MENTION] to get a set made for our 3rd gens. Unfortunately ADS doesn't seem too interested in making rear shocks for our rigs. Since I didn't want to wait any longer (and didn't want to settle for the Kings), SRQ-Runner suggested I go with the piggy back shocks made for the FJCruiser.

They have 16" compressed and 24.6" extended lengths. I have the OME861 coils in the rear, and from my research, these lengths are about perfect for these springs. They are valved for the heavier FJCruiser, but with all the extra weight I've added to my rig, we figured they would be about perfect. Unfortunately you can't get them with the adjustable clicker.

I've been running them for a couple of weeks now. No offroading. So far they seem very good around town.

Those are perfect for your set-up. I've said a few times that FJ shocks would be just right for a built 3rd gen with a lot of rear lift. Congrats on thinking outside the box and enjoy them.
 
Ever since I installed my SPC upper control arms, I’ve had issues with my tire grazing the windshield washer fluid reservoir. I know a few others have done this mod also, but here is my version.

I cut off the top lip around the opening so I could use the OEM gasket and filler neck. The filler neck will sit in the stock location.

Then I made this steel box to mount it in, and to provide protection from stone hits, etc.

Well my buddy from work finally got his older Jeep running reliably, so we decided to go to Silver Lake State Park and wheel in the dunes. I had never been there before, but he had several years ago. When we arrived we had to air down, which is absolutely critical if you want to be able to go anywhere in the super soft sand. I tried out my new JT Brooks deflators, and aired down to about 11 psi.

Since my buddy had been here before, I followed him around at first to get the lay of the land. We played around on some of the smaller dunes to get a feel for it.

Then we got braver and decided to try some of the larger dunes. When I saw this, I said “We’re going to drive up that!?” I really didn’t think my heavy, low powered truck could make it.

My buddy went first and made it up no problem. (He swapped in a V8 engine, so he had plenty of power in his light Jeep.) Here I am at the bottom of the dune, getting ready to make my run. It gives you some idea of how tall these dunes are, but the pics don’t capture how steep they get at the top. (Yes, some idiot parked his motorcycle right in my chosen line.)

I went for it. I got a good running start to pick up some speed and momentum. About 1/3 of the way up:

Looking down the length of the top edge of the dune, you can get an idea of how steep and narrow it is. If you do make it to the top, you have to be careful not to fly over the peak of the dune.

After that we made several more attempts at some of the taller dunes. Sometimes we made it, sometimes we didn’t and had to back down and try again. It was a lot of fun. Here are a few pics of my buddy’s Jeep making a run at another large dune:

Overall, I was quite pleased with my truck’s ability. My truck being so heavy and with the little motor didn’t give me the best power-to-weight ratio, but it hung in there with the Jeep. I’m sure the supercharger helped some too.

The only thing that concerned me was that sometimes when I got close to the top of a dune, and I let off the gas because I wasn’t going to make it, the engine would shut off. My buddy said it was because of the large load on the motor. The first time it happened, I freaked out and thought I blew up the motor, but I put it in park and it started right back up. This happened several more times, but would always restart, and I could back down the dune and try again. The truck ran the 150 mile trip home just fine.

Does anybody know why it shuts off like this? Or was I doing any damage to the motor?

Jeremy, it means you need to do a 5 speed manual tranny swap...the one and probably only mod you haven't done to this beautiful rig. Just kidding. I have no idea what would cause that.

Then I took some advice from [MENTION=116387]Unner[/MENTION] and wrapped my OME 861 springs with black HDPE spiral hose wrap. This was to prevent any squeaking and vibrations that some have experienced with these coils.

How has the spiral wrap held up on the springs? Have they stayed in place or shifted at all? Has the weight of the springs worn through or torn the wrap?

Mine has held up great, no issues to report, and most importantly no resonating noises from my springs anymore...

I crawled under the truck tonight to take a look. They look just like they did when I installed them. They fit nice and snug around the coils, so they won't shift. Not worn or torn at all. They work great. Would definitely recommend.

I crawled under the truck tonight to take a look. They look just like they did when I installed them. They fit nice and snug around the coils, so they won't shift. Not worn or torn at all. They work great. Would definitely recommend.

Is this spiral hose wrap similar to what you used?

The inside diameter is 5/8". The ID for the one you linked is 1/2". I think that will be too small. Even at 5/8" mine was very snug on the coils. Any smaller and I think you would have a really hard time getting it on there.

Would you say this is a good practice for other springs too, or just these (861s) in particular. I'll be installing some 891 at some point soon...

I've never heard of this problem with any other springs. If they've got the tight wraps at the top of the spring like the 861s it's probably not a bad idea, but when I was researching the problem I only found one other person who complained about this problem with 861s. It really depends on how much weight you've got in the back, I think I had just the perfect amount to cause the noise. I warn others now to do this before hand though because off the truck this takes minutes, on the truck it's nearly impossible without pulling the springs...
 
Bandit, I am curious if your filler panel LEDs still provide useful light output now that your headlights are upgraded. I am debating doing something similar with lights behind the filler panels and am concerned about the light being usable. I don’t have the light power you do but my LS460s, 55 ballast’s and CBI bulbs are pretty bright. Curious to your thoughts and if you have any output pics with the new headlights and filler lights.

The filler panel lights do add a little light off to the sides, since they are angled outward slightly. I have Rigid Industries 6" SR spot lights in the filler panels. I don't have any pics, but I'll try to get some.

Awesome build bandit! Took me about 2 hours reading your build thread haha. I was just wondering if you had any pics of the bracket you made when you installed your twin air compressor in the engine bay? I have a single in my 02 but will be swapping it with a dual and just trying to figure out how to mount it myself.
 
Can't believe I just went thru this whole thing, and it's my first time seeing it. Very impressive what you've been able to do and accomplish with all the different custom mods you've made to your truck over the years.

Sorry I didn’t see your post until now. Unfortunately I didn’t take any pics of the bracket before I installed it. It was pretty simple though. Just a flat piece with the feet bent and a few holes. Good luck with yours.
