Weathertech makes a step, designed to fold on impact
I prefer a full on hitch and ball, my last five trucks have had this setup
Been rear ended several times over the years, no damage to my truck, can’t say the same for the offender

I use a Tyger step/short bumper that has been tapped/hit at least 5 times. A few by myself backing up getting as close as I could to a wall. Comes with a locking hitch pin for easy removal if when you need the additional ingress/egress 4 wheeling. I also, added thick black pads from Amazon on the corners for potential minor hits from other mall drivers. Bought this off CARID and the tongue was to long and hit the spare. I told them about it and they said just keep it. I cut it to length and it has been great. Never mind the spare tire cover that got shredded after getting off the trail. Step took a hard hit coming off a steeper drop off without a hitch. No pun intended.

Yes. It was an inexpensive trial at the last minute for my 128 mile trail trip through the Mojave Preserve last week. Since I just purchased a brand new 285 tire and Pro wheel I wanted to see how or if it would protect. Obviously not. I am thinking of going with the UHMW spare tire skid plate since I don’t plan on adding a tire carrier or bumper at this time.

I leave my D-ring receiver in at all times. One person has already paid the idiot tax for not paying attention in traffic, saved my bumper.

I’ve never had an issue with me hitting the receiver. But I always keep it covered, for to me it looks better. I simply buy those rubber plugs found at all automotive parts stores, offered by whatever brand of towing supplies they carry. My current one is a Curt brand with their logo. They usually last me ten years or so and are inexpensive.
