SR5 = Sport Rally 5, meaning it's a 5 speed. Limited's don't come in manual transmission (im pretty sure, my limited is auto)

so i had a carfax done and i got the vin of the hood, which is scooped, and it came up as an SR5...
but the link that i was given earlier says that SR5's dont come with scooped hoods...

The Highlander/Sport models are just a different trim level of an SR5;I have the SR5 badge on the back.

I'd assume it would since even on my insurance it's listed as a SR5 but some of my cards have listed it as SR5/Sport 4Runner.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but the only way to know which 4runner is which is the 7th digit of vin.

The 7th digit is either a 4 or a 7.

4 or (6 new ones) = SR5 or Sport
7 = Limited

I have 4wd, leather seats, wood trim, a sunroof and power locks/windows and I have an SR5. I said screw it, bought all the limited decals and mats and made it a limited. :bluejump:

Yeah as Ron posted above, I do believe it was true at some point but anymore the SR5s are far more plentiful in auto than manual.

Regarding the whole "What does SR5 mean?" question, it's one of those things that goes way, way back to the 70's (before most of you guys were born, IOW!) :flipoff:

Manufacturers started putting 5 speed manual trannies on cars in the mid-70's, and it was a big deal and only the "sporty" models got the 5 speeds. It was the same for trucks, in fact, if you look at Toyotas from the late 70s and early 80s, even as late as 1983, a lot of them came with 4 speed transmissions as the standard and the 5 speed was only available as an upgrade.

So the "SR5" was the 5 speed package with other "performance" upgrades, and usually fancy stripes or stickers to indicate that it was an upgraded model from the base model.

Over time, of course, the 5 speed became the standard transmission for nearly all vehicles, and nowadays it seems like the 6 speed is the standard for manual trannies. At that point, "SR5" just meant "this is not a base model." You could still get a base model with a 5 speed, or an SR5 with a 5 speed, the SR5 just meant you got an updated package.

I don't know why Toyota hung onto the SR5 moniker as long as they did. Even now, 30+ years later, it doesn't really have a meaning (since AFAIK all 5th gen 4runners have a 5 speed automatic transmission) but maybe they just like the way it looks and sounds?

BTW, every now and then I see what appears to be a "base model" 4runner and it looks very odd to me. I'd guess that 99% of the 4runners I see on the street are either SR5's or Limiteds. :shrug:
