Basic Fuse Box Questions

Hi,

I just got my 4Runner a few weeks ago (don't worry, details coming as soon as I take some pics that don't have my rental car in the background).

I'm looking into wiring into the fuse box, but I'm not exactly sure how that would go. I'd like to do it as cleanly as possible, namely using the fuse box as intended, instead of a fuse tap or other solution.

Now my main question is: Am I able to wire into the unmarked, unfused slots on the fuse box? On my Blazer, they were marked Spare, so I assume they were wired and ready for use. On my 4Runner, they're simply not labeled. Basically I see three possible situations: either they're not slots (no metal contacts), they're slots that aren't wired to live power (so I'd need to connect them to positive AND connect them to my device), or they're wired for positive and I just need to wire to my device. Simply knowing which of these three would give me a solid starting place in how I plan to proceed.

Any information you can provide would be much appreciated.

P.S. I wasn't sure which forum to put this into. This one sounded like it was more for devices, but I'm sure many of you have wired your devices, so I thought it would be a good place for it. If any mods feel it would be better in General, please move it.
