Bass Pro buying Cabelas?

Heard this a few times, that would suck. Finaly got a cabelas in the area a few years ago and go there often. For what i shop for Cabelas is way better.

A Cabelas opened in my town last year and a Bass Pro is under construction. One buying the other would be interesting.

I would have though it would be the other way around until I read the article.

I like Cabelas, have their visa, and am a long-time customer, but some of their prices can be fairly outrageous. If I'm looking for something specific, I can often get it online somewhere else at 2/3 of what Cabelas wants for the same item. But they're kind of like the Wal-mart of outdoor gear: lots of stuff under one roof. I hang on to my visa because their points program is very good - never expire and you can buy firearms with them.

I have no experience with Bass Pro, as I think they're mainly in southern states.

I still remember when Cabelas had a single store was just about mail order-only. That was when Gander Mountain was just as big, if not bigger. We have GM here in MN. Compared to the "Wal-mart" that is Cabelas, GM is like Shopko .

I have a cabela's across the highway from me. I go here and play with what I want and then buy it online for half the price. Their prices are absolutely outrageous on nearly everything they have. I prefer them over bass pro though because I hunt instead of fish.

Cabela's, based out of Sidney, Nebraska. Bass Pro out of Springfield, MO. Maybe 10 hours drive apart? Growing up in SE KS, we shopped both by mail order generally. Cabela's was geared more towards hunting, and Bass Pro was geared more towards Fishing. They both slowly expanded their assortments until each was pretty much one stop shops for both Hunting and Fishing product. At least that's how I recall them growing up. I think they both were just one location stores until the mid-late 90's? or so when they started expanding. Not sure which one started expanding first.

I've always liked both stores, their formats, and product selection. I guess if Cabela's goes down, I'd rather see Bass Pro pick them up over anyone else.

I like Cabelas when I want to shop a physical store for the kind of stuff REI doesn't carry, but the one here in town has horrible customer service. Never been in a Bass Pro Shops, but it couldn't be any worse so I'll take it.

Speaking of outrageously over priced stores.... The REI in my town jacks up the price on literally everything, even candy. It's kind of ridiculous.

I prefer BPS because the prices are half of that of Cabelas. As of now I think that neither is geared towards either hunting or fishing more so than the other. It's pretty 50/50.

Get a membership card and a credit card. 15% back, and then when you get your dividend use to pay the credit card and then spend it and you get 15% on that too.

I guess they are both big box stores at heart, so what difference will it really make who owns who? I mostly camp / kayak / canoe so that's all any of these stores (including REI) are any good for in my opinion, and frankly I'd rather spend my money at a locally owned shop. Yes I'm that guy. :cheer2:

Nothing wrong with that. But I will say that growing up, Bass Pro had ONE store, the Springfield hdqtrs. Cabella's had two I think (Sidney and Kearney, Nebraska IIRC). So not that long ago these guys WERE the locally owned shop.

Damn, I'm getting old... just realized that was 20+ years ago since they've been that small. Seems like yesterday. :sad:
