Battery connect alarm sounds, please help

Please help, I'm desperate! I've searched for hours on threads about this topic, however none of the solutions I've read helped my situation.

I have a 1998 (3rd gen) 4runner.

I recently replaced the alternator, but when I reconnect the battery, the alarm sounds and the starter wont engage. The alarm sound is not the horn.

Now, when I have the ignition on and I reconnect the battery, the alarm doesnt sound, however, the marker lights blink and the red LED on the dash blinks.

When I attempted to engage the starter in this condition, the alarm quickly chirped three times. When I attempted to do anything else in this condition (open doors, close the hood, remove the key from ignition) the alarm sounds.

I've looked hard for any type of valet/alarm reset switch, and the only thing I've found was an odd switch in the fuse box. Experimenting with this switch resulted in nothing.

There is no button on the dash. Only the red alarm LED to the left of the steering column-

I think that's the process. I can't find the link right now but the info is out there. I'll post in the morning if that's not it.
 
The on/off switch in the fuse box looks to be the on/off for a remote start system from viper/DEI which would mean an aftermarket alarm system. Do you have an alarm remote?
 
Try putting the key in the door lock, turning it to the unlock position twice, then put it in the ignition and attempt to start it. I've found a few aftermarket alarms that are default wired to disable this way.

Okay, I'll try that tomorrow when the neighborhood isnt trying to sleep haha
 
My alarm system did that in my 2nd gen I just let it sit there for about 2 min flipping out and then It stopped and I could start and haven't had an issue

Ok so if what takeitapart said doesn't work I think you are going to have remove that lower dash piece under the steering wheel and try and find the brain for the alarm. The piece is held on with 4 - 10mm bolts, one in each corner and then it will just drop down. Try and trace the wires of the red led to get to the brain. Then see if just by unplugging the connectors of the brain will stop the alarm from going off. You could also get the model number off the brain of the alarm and then buy a matching remote to pair it.

No problem. There is a chance though that the alarm has a starter kill that runs through the brain so when you unplug it will stop the alarm from coming on but will also not allow you to start the truck. Where in california you located?

I heard this was possible but I'll give it a shot. I can always buy a key if needed. I'm in the bay
 
What's actually funny is that if it uses a starter disable relay attached to the system, it almost makes hot wiring the vehicle much easier. You'd simply look for the relay, unplug it, the jump a wire across terminals 30/87 of the relay harness.

It's an aftermarket alarm you have there.
That's a "valet" switch.
Turn ignition key to "on position" (do not start the truck),
Then flip the switch up.
The LED should blink solid once.
This puts the alarm into "valet" mode.
Now the alarm is off.

Do the same to take it out of valet mode.
The LED should blink twice to indicate this.

Do you know what type of alarm you have?
Show us a pic of your remote.

In 14 yrs of owning a shop I had to do this many times. Its amazing how many people own a car that has an A/M alarm and don't even know it. Then when the battery dies or gets disconnected, they are screwed.

I hate those stupid things! But I do love the remote unlock/start/windows up features. Guess I'm Hypocrite!

Get inside. Close the doors. Lock the doors with the switch on the driver door button by rear view mirror adjustment. Turn key ign to on. Flip switch turn key ign off then unlock and get out.

Then try and lock with the key fob. If the alarm system is armed it will beep or cherp. If not armed no sounds.

If you want you the Alarm on. Repeat these processes.
 
Find the brain, I can almost guarantee it is under the steering column where someone already mentioned taking off that piece of the dash (4 10mm bolts). Just unplug it and you will never have this problem again.

I too have a 98 that was sold to me without key fobs and I changed the battery and had this happen to me as well.

Everyone told me I was stupid for not doing the "cycle the key in the ignition a few times" trick but sometimes it is not that easy. If you can find the brain, just unplug it and you'll be good to go.
