Battery Light on

Well the wife came home and told me the battery light was on in the 4runner. :happens:

So I went down checked the volts on the battery 12V checks good.
Started the 4runner and there was 11V instead of a small charge. So I take the alternater out had it checked at autozone and it was bad. Would have been pissed if it wasn't.
All in all the job was not bad at all and now that won't happen in the middle of the winter.
This was all done on my 2003 with 111,000 original miles and that was the original alternater.

good you replaced it quickly. if you waited until the battery dies, you'll end up replacing the battery too. one time i forgot to turn off the key of the truck after working on it in the garage, the following day it would not start. Battery is dead. so I end up buying a new Exide battery and recharged the old one. It took a few days to recharge it and looks like battery is keeping the charge around 12.60 volts and higher, considered full charge. If you have only 12v, then that's pretty much a dead battery.

Mine is 12.60v or so also I just was rounding it off for the forum.
Yes the wife told me right when it happened and it was out of service till I got home from work the next day, so it was not to bad.
I wish I videoed it since I just saw the belt replacment video.

your old alternator probably is still okay. you just need to replace the voltage regulator from it or the leads inside it, that is if you want a cheaper fix. for anyone reading this, that's your other option.

Might be cheaper, but maybe not easier...and that's if you can get to the failing part...everything is 'integrated' these days, and if you can even get the replacement part at the local auto parts store.

I stand corrected...you can get the regulator separately and change it out...but WTH?

did a quick price check...rebuilt alternator complete around $150-$230

But just for the regulator...around $200???

Of course, it is a rebuilt alternator...but still...

The standard for a "Good" battery is somewhere between 12.6~12.8v. The charging system will usually put out about 13.6~14v depending on the vehicle.
