I have a serious problem. My battery exploded (pop, spark, smoke) up when I tried starting the 4r this afternoon. The battery had a crack about 5 inches wide on the side. Scared the living day lights out of me and the people around me.
So, I disconnected the battery and went to the nearest parts store. Got the optima red 35, per their computer selection.
This is where the fun (confusion) begins. When I put the battery in the 4r the cables barely reach the pos & neg poles. The poles in this battery are much farther from the cables than my previous battery (interstate) Since, I am at my place of work and is getting late, I tilted the battery a bit and connected it. The alarm goes on (horn) and the lights flashed for a few seconds. Disconnected battery and reconnected. I heard a couple of electrical components turn on. When I tried to crank the car.....nothing happened.
I can lower/raise the windows, turn on/off all the lights but, car won't start. I tried disconnecting the battery a couple of times and each I time I reconnected it the horn sounds and the lights would flash.
The only time the car acted like that before is when the previous battery was dying. The alarm would go on and lights would flash. Mechanic told me that toyotas are known for acting that way with a low battery. I thought the car had a short of some sort.
Anyway, I am planning on returning the battery tomorrow (don't like that it is much smaller than the previous one and that the cables don't quite reach the poles).
In the meantime, 4r is in the parking lot at mynplacebof work.
Do I have the wrong size battery?
Why won't the car start if everything else has power?
Why does the alarm go on and lights flash when I connect the battery?
Is there something I should be doing when I replace a battery on a 4r?
Can I jump start it without putting a battery in it and drive it to a shop?
